Kings Fish & Chips falls somewhere on the bi-polar spectrum when it comes to the food. Depending on what you order, flavor and quality vastly differ. One moment, you're enjoying the delicious, extra crispy, perfectly seasoned french fries, and the next you're wondering why they decided to serve very odd calamari "sticks".
I'm not totally against places where you have to sort of "discover" what's good and what isn't. I've been here twice and I've definitely done a little of both. As I mentioned, the fries alone are worth a trip here. They are very good, and are of the extra crispy twice fried variety. The fish patties, which I believe were cod in my case, are pretty good and are just fine after a dose of salt and vinegar. The tempura shrimp is flavorless and bland, the clam strips are a bit rubbery and the calamari "sticks" were something from a science fiction movie. These were large sticks, think large cheese sticks, in a beer batter. Inside is a long, skinny slice of calamari body, though it could be processed and pressed into that shape. It was super rubbery and bland and usually, the calamari just pulls out of the breading, leaving you with a big tube of beer batter. Not pleasant.
The service is OK, no complaints. They seem to prefer the regulars and are very friendly to them. Sadly, I don't think I'd ever become a regular here given the other options within 8 miles in any direction. In a pinch, I'd come back for some fish and chips. Perhaps if I'm feeling adventurous, I'll try a burger or some teriyaki and update my review. Until then, King's gets a solid 3 stars from me, getting 4.5 for the fries and 1 for that odd calamari, meeting somewhere right...
Read more(Looks like my old review disappeared somehow?) Anyway, the place is a bit of a mixed bag, there's lots of fun food here and a good selection, but everything fried here tastes like they don't change the oil out at all, or like they drain out half the oil when they change it to try to save money or something. I personally avoid the fried food if I can and the food's fine. Sometimes the fried oil smell gets so bad that just driving home with the food for my grandparents, the car fills with this nauseating smell of old, gross oil, and it doesn't help that everything fried is super greasy, so you take the fish out of the bag after the five-minute drive and everything's completely soaked, smelling a little like, uh, you know that smell when your feet are all sweaty and you take your socks off, but you're so tired that you don't bother to put them in the hamper, and you eventually pick them up after an hour and they've dried, changing the odor to something a bit different? That smell, it kinda smells like that. What's worse is that if you have any leftovers, the whole fridge picks up a version of that smell, and it grows twice as bad after you reheat the food, on top of everything being soggy with an unholy amount of oil that runs from it.
What stinks (ha) the worst is that I'm generally here to pick up food for my grandparents (now "grandparent", RIP. Unrelated I promise; she passed due to complications from a broken leg), who only like(d) the food here because of decades of loyalty, the Christian theming of a few things here, the few options for fish n' chips in Port Orchard, and their inability to taste food properly, not tasting...
Read moreWe like this place. There are some potential drawbacks, but overall the quality of what we order and the attentiveness and kind attitude of the staff deserves a great rating.
The menu is huge with many categories from teriyaki to fried fish to American burger and fried fare. So if you like tons of options, you'll love that. Give yourself plenty of time to read the menu on your first visit. Seriously, it's crammed full of stuff.
Hands down, my 2 favorite things to order are the halibut fish and chips and the tempura style onion rings. The fish portions are huge. I always take half home with me for another meal. Perfectly cooked and tasty. The onion rings come with a tasty tempura dipping sauce. The yakisoba is decent, as are the fried catfish and crunchy clams. Kings serves a very fresh and generously portioned side salad too, with homemade house dressing.
Drawback: One thing we hate there is the music. The owners only ever play a country/contemporary style Christian radio station, which we don't care for at all. Big turn off. And the sound quality there is awful, loud, and full of static, so it's really distracting while trying to enjoy a family meal. Honestly, we'd prefer silence. Or even classical, if the owners don't want to play modern popular music.
Despite the terrible music, the staff is just so nice. I know they occasionally give out meals to the homeless and people in need, so that's admirable and we're happy to...
