I recently went for the second time. I feel like I maybe should give three stars because of everyone elseās experience, and the atmosphere is beautiful, but it does not reflect my personal experience, so two stars stays.
The first time we went about 9 months ago we were in a group that decided to each get something different so we could sample multiple offerings.
I ended up with a pork steak of some sort (I donāt remember the specific name, but I had been enjoying pork at home recently and though it sounded good) but it was like an average pork chop. Average. Not even close to the pork steaks I had been pan searing at home.
On the other hand, my daughter-in-law ordered an amazing New York strip steak and my son ordered the Wild Boar. The steak was really good, but the Wild Boar was absolutely amazing!!! The boar was something none of us had ever tried, so it felt like a bit of an adventure. Well, it tasted better than any of us ever imagined!!! We all agreed that it was hands down the best dish. Even my kids who had been there many times before and never ordered it said it was the best.
Now, Iām from out of town, so I donāt get back there often. However, for months Iāve been telling people how much I want to come back and get the Wild Boar for myself because it was so good.
The opportunity finally came this week when we went to Kzoo to have joint dinner with family to recognize my husband for Fatherās Day and celebrate my upcoming birthday. We both knew exactly what we wanted to order. You can imagine our disappointment to find that the amazing dish we had come specifically to order was no longer on the menu.
The waitress explained that it was not ordered often enough. I get it. It was intimidating to order the first time. No one knew what to expect. However, I am so sad that the response to low orders of what was an absolutely amazing dish was to remove the amazing dish instead of finding ways to promote it. This could and should be the signature dish of the restaurant! I have tried to find it other places and cannot. Instead of eliminating it, maybe promote it, or offer an appetizer that gives a smaller portion in a slightly different way to introduce people to the amazing flavor!! Then they will want more.
Tearing myself from that disappointment (which was very difficult) I started looking for our second favorite, the steak. That was gone as well. š£
I ended up getting a flank steak that was just fine, though it had a mushroom demi glacĆ© and I really donāt care for mushrooms but there wasnāt much available without them. Honestly, the only other semi appealing option for me was a steak salad but I just couldnāt bring myself to eat salad for my birthday dinner when I was expecting Wild boar!
It is now two days later and I am still disappointed enough that I decided to come leave a review.
If they bring back the Wild Boar, I will make the trip again and happily eat here whenever Iām in town. When they had the NY Strip steak it was my kids favorite place. I donāt know how often they will return now. Personally, I will not be back.
If you have specific dislikes, pre check this menu. The duck (which I generally love) is black pepper coated, the only other chicken dish has shrimp. So much seafood!!! (BTW, someone at our table did get the chicken dish with shrimp. She kept repeating that it was a āuniqueā and āunusualā flavor⦠I never nailed her down on good vs bad unusual) Anyway, this place may be great if you are a seafood fan, not if you cannot eat it.
Honestly, I do have some unique food sensitivities that eliminated certain other dishes. It just happened that almost every dish has something I could not eat or strongly disliked. That doesnāt happen very often.
While I have been promoting this place from afar for over a year, any time a friend asked about a nice place near Kzoo I jumped in, sadly I can no longer do that.
Iām confident that if you check the menu and there are things you like and can eat, you will enjoy the experience. Unfortunately, the things I desire to eat...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThe place looked nice. I felt poor going in, thats usually a good sign for expensive. Young me would think this food is great because it costs a lot!!! Older me (now) thinks for the money spent on this food should be REALLY GOOD.... Its not.
They don't even have coasters, Its like little tissues (pretty cheap). Even chillies (75 percent cheaper) offer better food, cheaper prices and they have coasters. The AC was not on (it was 90 degrees that day), how can a place charging 50 bucks for a french fry (
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis used to be my favorite restaurant in Portage. After what I experienced last night I will never step foot in that establishment again. Forgive me for such a long review but whoever runs this place needs to know. I called for reservations days in advance for my girlfriend's 30th birthday and requested a seat by the fireplace if possible. The receptionist said that shouldn't be a problem. We arrive and there are 5 groups in the whole restaurant. Of course the fireplace seat it taken, oh well not a big deal. So she sits us next to the party of 15 that are extremely loud, great. Then we order drinks, they are out of crown royal. Ok fine I guess I'll just have a $9 beer. She then proceeds to tell me they are out of the 2 best appetizers on the menu the sea salt shrimp and calamari. I look at the menu and noticed that it has completely changed since last time I went. They no longer have the fieldstone steak, blue cheese butter or the pot roast. They did not have any other vegetable available besides green beans. I got the london broil since nothing else on the menu looked good and my girlfriend got the roasted chicken. Our food comes and my girlfriend cuts open her chicken and it's completely dark pink and very undercooked, not even edible. Luckily the other half of the chicken was cooked so she could eat something. The waitress tried her hardest, I feel bad for her. I still tipped her and was nice. I had to hold back my anger because they ruined our whole night. Do not go to this place if you want good food. I would bet they will be out of business by the...
