On the date I’m writing this review, this place had a rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars. My friends and I came here expecting phenomenal Cantonese/Szechuan cuisine based off that rating. Boy were we disappointed and felt misled. The service was friendly, the prices were nice but the food was far from a 4.3 star rating. The menu was obviously Americanized and even the clientele was majorly non-Asians. There’s burgers on the menu for crying out loud. Rather than a Cantonese/Szechuan based cuisine as advertised, this was most definitely Chinese-American.

The food was decent with average proportions (as expected for the price), but nothing spectacular. We also felt misled when we saw Hong Kong style chow mein on the menu, which typically means it’s served with crispy pan fried noodles with the sauce, meat and veggies added on top. The noodles as we’re told were soft and none of their chow meins had the crispy pan fried variety, despite it being listed under the Hong Kong style chow meins on their menu.

I was initially going to give this place a 1 star rating to lower its overall misleading rating of 4.3 out of 5, but decided to give it a 2 instead since the service was good and the prices were fair. I can’t in good conscience give it any higher than that based on the sole purpose of our visit, which was for the food and it was subpar at best. Nowhere near the authentic or high quality Cantonese/Szechuan we were expecting based off the reviews and ratings. For a Chinese-American restaurant,...

This place has the best Chinese food of any Chinese restaurant I've ever eaten at in my life. And I've eaten at many Chinese restaurant over my short fifty plus years. Especially their Pot Stickers. I make it a mission to try and find the best Pot Stickers around and so far this place has them. YUMMY!!😛 Don't forgo the "Dragon Special " either. It's to die for.😍

The ONLY reason they didn't get 5 stars was due to the look and especially the feel of the environment. I always order my food to go just because I do not like the environment as far as being a place I would like to relax and have a meal. It's a bit dirty looking and very outdated as far as restaurant decor goes. Now I can accept an outdated decor in a restaurant and one that isn't as detailed in their cleaning as I am due to my OCD. Especially with food like theirs. However, the one thing I really can not overlook, no matter how good the food is, is the clientele.

Basically due to the caliber, of people who dine in the restaurant and especially the ones who hang out there like bar-flys in the lounge after 5pm. A bunch of animals. 🐖🐕🐀🦍

I'm not saying I'm better then any of those people or not, I just don't like to be around those types of personalities when I'm trying to enjoy my meal, if I can help it.

But the interior atmosphere aside. you will definitely not just get a great tasting meal but you will also get enough food for another meal the next day.

Basically: EXCELLENT FOOD AT...

I've been going here all my life. Im 24 years old now and my mother use to order dinner from "The Dragon" back in the 90's and we enjoyed it very much as kids, and even STILL today. Henry and Ms. Lee are the greatest. Friendly staff and fast service. I take my family, friends and co workers here and they enjoy it. It's kind of a generation thing for us. My nieces and nephews even love this place "Momma, can we go to Rainbow Dragon?" or "Uncle, can we go to Rainbow Dragon?" They lean towards the Pork Fried Rice and Sweat And Sour Chicken and if they're not up for cantaneze food, they have an American Menu. They serve awesome Hamburgers and Fries. Either way, they love "The Dragon." I love their Pork Chowmain and my mom loves their Sweet And Sour Spare Ribs. I've heard their Duck and Mushrooms is good. I am not fond of duck. They have a huge verity so just try it!! NOW, the place could use some upgrading BUT what can I say. The food is amazing and the prices are outstanding, huge portions and we ALL leave happy and full. I catered from here about a year ago for my mothers birthday party and trust me!, everyone had a tray to take home and everyone at that party was satisfied! Every single time I go out to eat with a friend I take them here. No complaints what so ever. LOVE LOVE LOOOVE...

Last week we ordered food to go. My got home and said they had forgotten my sesame chicken but they gave us sweet & sour chicken. She took it back and they told her that was sesame chicken. She pulled up sesame chicken on her phone and showed them. They said not everyone makes it the same way. Now I know sometime things vary from restaurant to restaurant but this was clearly not what we had ordered. They insisted we got sesame chicken. I told her to just come home. I took it back down there and told them they could keep it cause it wasnt what I ordered and they lost any future business from me. Dont give me sweat & sour chicken then tell me its sesame chicken. Every 5 year old know what sweet & sour chicken is.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 10/10 Rainbow Dragon is a hidden gem! The General Tso's chicken is perfection – crispy, flavorful, and just the right amount of heat. The egg rolls? Absolute heaven. You can taste the love and care in every bite. But the atmosphere tells a different story. The owner is a real character – friendly and welcoming – but you can tell the restaurant hasn’t fully bounced back from COVID. The space feels a bit run down, and these days it seems to cater mostly to video lottery players. Still, the charm of the food and the owner’s kindness make it worth stopping by, even if the vibe isn’t quite what it used to be.

I absolutely adore Rainbow Dragon! The food is middle of the road, tasty enough but not, like, OMG. What really makes this place is a combination of the HUGE portions, inexpensive pricing and fast friendly service. I have been going to Rainbow Dragon for years and always look forward to their crab puffs and heaping platefuls for under $10. Always lots of leftovers. This place is an unpretentious and accessible blessing to the working class clientele (myself included) of East Portland's (rather rough) "Numbers" neighborhood who don't need fancy, just tasty and filling for a fair price.
