Unfortunately, today's visit to St. Honore was a major letdown, and I sincerely hope it's not a sign of declining standards, including a lost order, then a partial order, and dangerous, unhygienic food handling.
We arrived during a quiet period and placed a simple order: two sandwiches and a soup. After about 25 minutes--well beyond a reasonable wait--I noticed others who ordered after us being served. I approached the counter to check on our order. No one was present, the order screen was blank, and the staff were chatting among themselves. As I suspected, our order had been lost.
That kind of thing happens--no big deal if it's handled well. But instead of acknowledging the mistake or offering even a basic apology, I was met with "You're good." I watched as they pulled up the order from the system history, and I assumed they'd prioritize getting it out quickly. After all, this is mostly pre-made food.
Not quite. About 5-6 minutes later, only the soup appeared. I took it to our table, returned, and waited, expecting the sandwiches to follow. Nothing. I asked again and got a blank look from the same staff member. I reminded her--again--that we were still waiting on two sandwiches. She turned to check the queue screen, which was once again blank. At this point, we had been inside for nearly 45 minutes and had barely started eating.
I decided to hover nearby to monitor things, and I'm glad I did--otherwise, we probably would've been forgotten a second time. I watched as the prep cook worked on someone else's order before making any progress on ours, only preparing one sandwich and leaving the second untouched. He clearly knew there was a delay--he made eye contact with me and raised his eyebrows as if I was the one being unreasonable. No apology, no urgency, no recognition that anything had gone wrong.
And then came the most troubling part. As we finally sat down to eat, we noticed that the same prep cook was exhibiting unhygienic behavior. Over 10 minutes, we watched him touch cash, his phone, an iPad, cabinet handles, his hair, and people's food--without once changing his gloves. It wasn't just careless; it was gross and unacceptable for any food establishment.
I understand staffing is hard right now, and mistakes happen. This visit delivered neither quality nor consistency. There was no leadership, no accountability, and no basic food safety. I'm not sure if this location is struggling more than others, but based on today's experience, it will be our last visit.
I expect better from St. Honore. And frankly,...
Read moreI visited the St. Honoré location in Macadam for the first time in December, and unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience. While I was there, I noticed a staff member with a face mask on beautifully arranging a catering tray and asked, out of curiosity, how much something like that would cost. Rather than providing a simple answer, the employee curtly told me to check the website. Though their tone was even, it was clear this person had no interest in engaging or offering basic customer service.
Despite that, my family and I proceeded to order drinks and pastries from the other employee behind the register who offered us a kind smile and was polite. However, but we quickly regretted it. The pastries were below average, and seating inside was extremely limited. Since we were a family of four, we grabbed two extra chairs to sit together at a small table—simply trying to stay out of the cold. The same staff member (wearing the face mask at the time) informed us that adding chairs was a fire hazard. While there was a small sign indicating this, we hadn’t noticed it when making the effort to seat ourselves. Instead of addressing it right away, the employee waited until we were seated before coldly telling us to move. Her attitude made us feel unwelcome, and unfortunately, that feeling overshadowed our entire visit.
We ended up sitting outside in the freezing cold, drinking coffee that did little to warm us up—not just because of the temperature, but because of the unwelcoming atmosphere. Sadly, we had already left a tip at the time of ordering, but this establishment certainly didn’t deserve it. As long as this employee remains, I have no intention of ever...
Read moreWent in hoping for and craving an authentic French pastry (choquettes). I had heard online and through friends this place is authentic and one of the best in Portland, I found that to be not the case. The pastries were disappointing and not authentic at all. The choquettes tasted off and had barely any sugar over any of them. I also picked up an eclair which, once I inspected it, had obviously been frozen and was simultaneously mushy and hard and did not taste great. When I was there I also noticed that the croissants in the case were huge and very American looking, like something you'd see at a grocery store here, not appetizing at all. I don't understand why Americans settle for bakeries of this quality. I can only assume there's no other competition in this city if people think this is good. Save your money for a trip to France, don't buy this crap.
Employees were nice, nothing is their fault, make...
