Have been coming to Thai Orchid for decades, back when there was the old location off Burnside. In a growing city of restaurants, Thai food has become a dime a dozen and only the strong or unique survive. I will say that Thai Orchid is consistent and better than many other newer establishments promoting fusion and glitzy modern style. After spending many years dining around Los Angeles and sampling a diverse range of true authentic world cuisines I'm sometimes skeptical to Portland food reviews, especially when it comes to ethnic food. We recently came here for a family birthday dinner. I hadn't been to this location for over ten years so I was interested to see if it was close to what I remembered. The establishment has a nice darker interior and decor with a little bit of old Thai charm, which is nice, calm and quiet. Our group was seated in the private room toward the back. Plenty of food was ordered and everything was delicious. From Pad Kee Mao with shrimp, Golden Squid, Pad Thai, Pineapple Fried Rice, Thai Salad to Massaman Curry to name a few. Everything was cooked just right, nothing was burnt or dry or off tasting and bland. Food was hot and came in a steady stream, flavors were authentic, veggies and meats tasted fresh. Service was good, attentive and quick. They did forget one dish, but it was quickly rectified. Other than that, no complaints. They also have good deals with lunch specials and parking is easy. On a side note, prices here are very average and fair for this style of food and establishment. Sure you can get a large side of plain rice for less somewhere else but it's not uncommon to see a range of $1.00 - $4.00 from location to location, especially around LA. I surely wouldn't consider it a defining attribute to what makes a restaurant good or not. This place is fantastic, definitely worth stopping in for.

My experience at Thai Orchard was highly disappointing. Despite arriving on time, there were no other customers in the restaurant and yet the staff completely ignored me. To make matters worse, they couldn't even find my order, claiming that it hadn't been made. I had to wait an additional 15 minutes until it was finally ready. When I received my order, it wasn't even hot. I opened the box to find a sad sight - the drunken noodles and chicken basil carrots and broccoli were far from appetizing.

Immediate service and accommodating staff. The bar and friendly tender made the wait fly by, not that there was much of a wait. Met a groovy older gal that told us how ridiculous it was that even though her daughter and attached boyfriend live above her, she still has to go out by her self for a drink and dinner most of the time. Love your mothers! When you don't, Thai Orchid will be there. When you do, Thai Orchid will still be there.

UPDATE: They refunded my money last night and the manager took the time to call me and apologize for the way the food looked. She said that there is a "way of setting the food up" so that it looks the way it's supposed to and she sent me photos of how it looks after she set it up. It didn't look good. I am leaving the rest of the review because it truly was my experience. But I wanted to be fair and let everyone know that they resolved the issue of my refund and seem to be very decent people.

*I went to this place and I was so hungry.I hadn't eaten all day and it was like one o'clock. I ordered my food which came to twenty nine dollars. I ordered my food to go and I went outside and got in my car and opened up my food to see what it looked like and it was disgusting, the laziness and the pure joke that I saw. In one container was a quarter head of lettuce wrapped in cellophane. In another container, it was full of those fried noodles that you can buy in a can at the grocery store. The third container held some pork. That literally looked like small worms. It didn't even look like real pork. It looked like dog food with about three tablespoons of some sort of dried vermicelli sitting on top off to the side. And then another container held some sauce. What I ordered was lettuce wraps, and then I ordered a pork noodle dish. I immediately walked back into the restaurant and explained to the cashier that I did not want the food. It was appalling that they would actually give that to someone.I'm so glad that I opened my bag before I left. Then they said they would refund my money and it would take a few minutes. So I sat in my car, and I waited for it to show on my credit card app. What ended up happening is it showed 2 charges for 29 Dollars, and then one refund for twenty nine dollars. Ultimately, leaving me in the same position as when I started and returned the food. My daughter took my phone back into the restaurant because I'm disabled and she showed the man. My credit card app and exactly how the charges we're showing in the account and the one refund and the man said that the charge was pending, and it would fall off. The man knew that I lived in Eugene. I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it, but I hope not. Anyhow, i'm at home now and i've been home for a few hours and I looked at my credit card app and that charge for twenty nine dollars is still there. I immediately handed them their food back and explained to them that I was unhappy with it and did not wish to eat it. And that is the way they treated me. I was extremely polite and I tried to get the man to understand I took pictures of the food which I will include in this review. I don't know about the rest of their food, but I was completely disappointed and left hungry and angry. Although I didn't show them that I was angry i tried to give him the benefit of the doubt and went home. I'm sorry I wanted to post pictures, but there wasn't a way to post them. Ultimately, so i'm sorry that they weren't included, but you would be appalled...

I have a wheat allergy and I’ve ordered fried rice from here about 3-4 times. I always ask that it be made gluten-free. The negative effects of my allergy don’t generally show up for a few days so it’s sometimes hard to pinpoint where the contamination came from but I’m super selective about what I eat due to my allergy so I generally eat the same things and have to pay close attention. A couple months ago I started eating here and now after painful and troublesome trial an error have realized that they have been basically poisoning me. I’m 100% sure they still use typical soy sauce which has wheat in it instead of using something like Tamari which doesn’t.. Pacific Breeze, the other Thai Restaurant that I frequent can make things gluten free with no problem so I thought other places might be capable but I was wrong. I haven’t eaten anything for the last two days due to my whole body being a complete mess due to these people’s lack of care when I comes to allergies. Food allergies are no joke and can result in death but with wheat allergies specifically there are soooooo many crazy symptoms that can really impact someone’s day to to day for weeks at a time. The symptoms that I suffer are loss of appetite, loss of sleep, bad skin reactions, itching, gut pain, brain fog, irritability, depression, lack of focus and light sensitivity al of which impact my ability to work and interact with others. Please stop playing with peoples lives and do some due diligence when it comes to allergies, you could kill someone. I won’t be ordering...
