Tony's has always been one of my favorite Portland donut shops; an honest home-town alternative to Holy Donut or other newcomers. However, their recent COVID practices make me very uncomfortable as a customer.
For example, today I was picking up a dozen donuts for a work crew, Tony's would be perfect. Walk into the shop and the owner and all of the food service staff are unmasked, speaking over the donuts and in the faces of their customers, who were uniformly masked. Perhaps the owner is not convinced that COVID is spread in the air, or they may not have received the state memo requiring masking in food service.
Regardless of COVID, this is a food facility! If Dunkin Donuts workers wear hair nets and masks to rack donuts, that shows me a measure of respect and responsibility to keep my food safe.
Come on! Do I want to see a long-haired kitchen worker mixing dough in a 40 quart Hobart without a hair net, COVID or not?
In this time of uncertainty, I want to feel safe in the businesses I patronize. Unfortunately Tony's is off my list until they respect this...
Read moreOur favorite donut shop never lets us down. When we venture into town, we often pick up a 1/2 dozen donuts and some eclairs for a treat. They bake the old fashioned donuts we had as kids and not the greasy lead sinkers that you often get at the chains. Unlike the latter's donuts they do not revisit you a few hours later.
Whenever our family 'From Away' comes back to visit, the first stop, after the baggage claim at the airport, is Tony's which is conveniently nearby. The grandchildren love to stand at the counter display and pick out their favorite donuts and pastries. It is the proverbial 'kid in the candy shop' scene. Usually a few donuts never make it back to the car.
The counter clerks are very patient as you pick out one of these and two of those and ask for granulated sugar on some and powdered sugar on others.
If you have never had them, give them a visit, but beware: you won't be satisfied with 'chain' donuts anymore. By the way: the donuts with the holes in the middle have had all the calories removed, so eat...
Read moreOverall horrible experience. Go to the Cookie Jar where they appreciate your business. If you stop in to buy doughnuts or pastry for MMC like I used to, you better call ahead. The man who answers the phone and waits on you will be pissed if he has to pull out more than six items to put in a box. He lectured me about calling ahead! The doughnuts and pastry are not as good as they used to be. The service is worse. I called the other day to order two-hours ahead of pick-up, like he told me to a year ago, I asked for Lemon Squares or Raspberry Squares. I heard "nope" they don't make these anymore. I asked about Cream Horns and he quickly said they do have them and I asked for a dozen. He said, we have just 10. I ordered them and then needed to ask what other type of pastry they had. I ordered six chocolate eclairs. It was like pulling teeth. He didn't offer anything... I had to ask. the pastry was old and stale. Please find another bakery.. Two Fat Cats / Cookie Jar and so many others are fabulous and want...
