Very homey place that still has such a classy feel (cloth napkin type) with amazing food that’s seasoned just right. Huge flavors that aren’t overpowering on mismatched plates that add to the family style serving. My boyfriend and I sat at the table that faced the open kitchen and loved the show
Drinks: Non #1 - Not bad. A nice bubbly drink with a nice fruit and citrus blend. It looks pretty small in the glass so I was a little disappointed Strawberry Ghia Lemonade - delish! No complaints and love the hint of mint
Food: Mini Madelines: it may feel silly to spend more than $5 on bread but these are crafted so beautifully that even without the butter I would have devoured them. They have an unexpected hint of spice from the jalapeño dusted on. I know I’m going to dream of them for the rest of my life. Shrimp: it also feels silly to spend $7 on one piece of shrimp but with it shelled and then yuzu mayo and seasonings, god I would have ordered 6 more Corn ribs: delish and it was very thoughtful that it came with a dish to throw the “bones” in as well as wet wipes because it’s best to eat with your hands. My only comment would be that I wish it came with toothpicks, but other than that I’m dying to know the spice blend Khao Soi pasta: I was expecting the sauce to be thicker but I’m so glad it proved me wrong. Super simple but bold. Wish there were more chicken pieces but I recommend it nonetheless Chicken: I’ve only liked mushrooms three times in my life and today was the third. If only the maitake came out, I would have gobbled it with the basil and ginger in the gorgeous dark soy sauce up, but the chicken was tender and crispy. Honestly for me the green onion slices tasted exactly like the green onions on the yakitori I would order as a kid growing up in Japan Gelato: no notes just love
Last notes: I feel like good service is hard to come by sometimes and then 20% tip feels obligatory. Everything from the bottled water to refill as the night when on, to staff bringing over a menu with notations on what is and isn’t ok for someone with a shrimp allergy, to seeing servers wiping dishes to make them more presentable before they went out, to timeliness, to wiping the table between courses was all so nice. But of all of those things, what really got me was the coasters. As a second gen immigrant I couldn’t help but shed a small tear. Can’t wait to...
Read moreTotal rip off. Small portions, tiny drinks, big prices.
The food was good, not great. You can walk around with a blind fold on in Portland and get great food.
What bothered me about this place was the obnoxious prices. The perfect example of this - $17 for a 4 oz wine pour. Yes you read that right. Picture a shot glass of wine for $17. They serve their wine in what looks like a tiny taster glass. Then you get basically 3 sips. The wine list is nice but I'm a wine maker and I know what these bottles cost. Their bottle list is laughably priced. There's nothing on it for less than $300. 5X wine mark up is for fools. A bottle Oregon Pinot you can buy for $56 priced at $324.
It's supposed to be this "family dinner" thing but portion sizes are tiny. Your drinks will be always empty. Total capitalist rip off. We had 3 people in our party. We had 2 apps, 2 sides and split one branzino main fish meal - our bill for 3 people was $280 before tip. In my family dinners we have lots of food and drink. Not a spoonful of pasta and a sip of wine.
We each only had two drinks and when our food arrived our second drinks were gone. Instead of ordering another we finished and left.
I hope the restaurant is reading this - it's a give and take with your customers, don't rip them off with this 4 oz wine pour BS. Your food was fine but way overpriced. Branzino for 3 cost $78. It was tiny. I left hungry.
Portland people can be blind goats when it comes to trendy restaurants, "I loved it sooo much - but I just spent $200 for my meal and i'm hungry".
I do not recommend. Cool interior and very nice service, just don't like getting taken advantage of.
By the way, when we ate at 7:30 on Saturday night, most of the table were empty. I bet they get no return customers, you can see where this is headed - so owners, stop ripping off customers on the wine and drinks. Some crappy Taiwan beer in a can for $8. Give me a break. Hard pass. Should be in a episode...
Read moreThere's so much to be said about this incredible restaurant that recently opened up in the Hollywood district. Overall, it has quickly become my favorite spot in Portland - a perfect location for a date night, a get-together with friends, or if you're just looking to sit at the bar / chefs counter and hang out: Xiao Ye is a place to enjoy innovative, mind-blowing food / flavors in a beautifully-designed, warm space.
I'll speak to the food, beverage program, service, and atmosphere in a bit more detail.
The Food: I'm constantly blown away at the creativity of each dish I've tried here. The menu is always fresh (and consistently being re-invented but with some mainstays - e.g., the madeleines). The squash toast, radicchio, and chanterelles are great examples of how the team at Xiao Ye presents with seasonal, high quality ingredients in unique, yet perpetually comforting ways. I have no doubt in my mind that the food alone is worthy of national recognition (and they're already getting it).
The Beverage Program: It's a well-curated wine list with myriad unique options that pair beautifully with your meal. Each cocktail on the menu is well-balanced - spanning flavor profiles that will appeal to any cocktail enthusiast.
The Service: The front of house team at Xiao Ye is second to none. They are all warm, friendly, detail-obsessed, and passionate about Xiao Ye - elements that instantly make any diner feel welcome and taken care of.
The Atmosphere: Even on a classic cold, rainy day in Portland, one will still feel warm and comforted upon stepping into this space. The design of each facet of Xiao Ye has been meticulously thought-through - all working in harmony to create a place that you can come to nourish & warm your soul.
I've been recommending Xiao Ye to anyone who will listen (much to my friends' annoyance) and I maintain that it's a gem that we are all lucky to have in our backyards. Go here - you...
