Visited this restaurant in downtown Portsmouth NH. The porch dining seats were full so we were seated in the main dining room. The porch or deck is waterfront real estate hanging over the Piscataqua River. Great views of the river north and the new bridge as well as the big bridge. Not sure if it has sunset views?? The views from the window seats...which we had...from the main dining room were just as impressive. Nicely appointed and plenty of room to sit comfortably. The hostesses that we met upon entering the restauran t were all nice and friendly. Now the meal...our server Carley was quick to greet us with a smile and the usual questions. We ordered the Seafood Linguini and the House Steak tips w/salad. We also tried the Grilled Asparagus side plate. FYI...House Steak tips come with mashed potatoes, which I don't eat so I had the green beans that were great. The tips were ordered med. rare and came out perfect. Slightly charred and great flavor. The portion size is VERY generous! The house salad was fresh, excellent variety on veggies and again...generous! The grilled asparagus was tender, flavorful and seasoned nicely. Usually thick spears (see the pic) turn me off because they are stringy and chewy. Not these...nice job!!! The Seafood Linguini was very good. Bay Scallops, Mussels and med. Shrimp. Delicious and cooked perfectly. Couple of issues with plate #1 of the Seafood Linguini...please note this is NOT a deal breaker as seen by my 5 star rating. 1 of the shrimp were not deviened and stuck out like sore thumbs, alot of people freak out about this when it does happen. We just know better that it is purely aesthetic. The linguini was very overcooked. The texture along with the base sauce gave the plate a mushy pasty texture. We alerted our server Carley and she was quick to apologize and offer to replace the plate or choose another item. We chose to have them try again with this meal. While we waited the short time for this to be prepared the manager Emily came over to apologize and make sure everything else was good. Now plate #2 of the Seafood Linguini arrives. Only took 10 minutes!!! The seafood was still excellent ...but the linguini is still overcooked...better... but just not what we like. However we did eat this plate and did bring this issue to our servers (Carley) attention...honestly we just didn't want to wait for another item. At this point we had finished our meals and were waiting for the check when Emily the manager came back over with another apology and the check which was minus the Seafood Linguini cost. We told her we did not expect this (we don't look for free meals) and were willing to pay full price since we had eaten the meal. She assured us this is how they get better at customer service by doing the "right thing" Kudos to this restaurant. I am impressed and will certainly be back. Give this place a try, I'm sure you will be impressed too. Till next time...Q

Oh my, this was one of the worst decisions. 🙁👎 The food was horrible. Both my friend and I wanted some yummy fish dishes but we both had terrible food. I was even in shock because the green beans clearly were cooked at different times some were very Brown and overcooked and some were overcooked and green. Which the flavors got mixed up because of that. The mashed potatoes, I'm not sure but I think that they are not fresh. And they had what seemed to be a lot of butter and salt. Bottom line, it was NOT fresh, it smelled, it was inconsistent and it was way overpriced! Truly heartbreaking because the reviews and service was good. It was very busy there and a nice location. The reviews suggested it was a good place for fish too. 🤦♀️ This was really not good at all. We wasted our money. At least I hope you have a better experience if you choose to eat here. Something to mention- They weren't so good with my food allergies/limitations. I didn't feel they were as good as they could be like most restaurants are. 💯% disappointed.🙁 If you found this review helpful in any way, please give me a thumbs up 👍 and feel free to follow me for future reviews.😀

I read about this place and specifically went to Portsmouth to eat at this restaurant. It is located next to some really cool tug-boats and has a fantastic view. Most people ate outside, however, we could not fit outside with my son who needed a high chair. We ate in the dinning room which allowed us to have some more space. The wait staff had lots of trouble opening the large sliding doors which was a little annoying since they had to reach over us but once opened, at least we got to feel like we were outside. On top of that, we had to leave my sons stroller at the door, and unload EVERYTHING in it. Was kind of a hassle. I thought the food was ok but not sure I will go back. My dad and I both had the soup which was supposed to have seafood in it, and neither of us found any. Weird? Also, our waitress was very inattentive and would leave us alone at the most inconvenient times...like when we would need a drink refill, or because food was forgotten, and when we wanted to pay to leave and she was MIA. Still, it is a beautiful location and a couple who can sit out on the deck, will really enjoy it!

Spent a night in Portsmouth, NH and ate at the River House. It was on our list of must try places to eat based on google reviews that we read. We went during the summer, ate outside on the upstairs outdoor patio that overlooked the water. We started with a bowl of Seafood chowder, was not your average chowder. Nice and creamy with shrimp, lobster, clams & haddock. Was so full of flavor! For entrees we had River House Steak Tips w/mashed potatoes and asparagus. OH- MY!!! So tender and full of flavor and the mashed potatoes were equally delicious! New England Baked Haddock- I’m not usually a fan of haddock. I guess I’ve just never tried one that was prepared so well! Was prepared with a shrimp and Romano Panko cheese crust and then oven baked, Yummy! The lobster roll was a decent size with good size chunks and very tasty! I just wished for the price of $45 there was a little more meat. Waffles fries were very tasty, seasoned well and cooked just right. Will definitely dine here again. I just would order two of the steak tip dinners for what I paid for the lobster roll. It was that good!!!

The food is pretty average and sorta forgettable. The only thing I recommend if their seafood chowder. It's super creamy with a decent amount of seafood and great amount of flavor. We ordered two appetizers: the classic mussels and lobster artichoke dip. The classic mussels were just okay. The pieces of bread it came with were completely burnt on one side. They definitely left them on the grill for way too long. The lobster artichoke dip was on the tart side. It's a cool concept as it is a spin on the popular spinach artichoke dip but I just didn't care for the dish. They use pieces of sourdough toast instead of chips and I normally love sourdough bread but I wasn't very impressed with theirs...I'm not even sure if it was sourdough honestly. My date's ordered the fish tacos were pretty alright but the side of corn salad was gross. The seafood linguine was overloaded with shallots...the flavor from this pasta dish was just very underwhelming. Huge portion though! I felt like I ate a good amount of it and it still looked like I barely touched it.

I went there for happy hour (HH) time frame. It was just so-so cheap brand cocktails. I ordered Kim Crawford N.Z. Sauvignon Blanc but they ran out. Bummer. Therefore, I ended up ordering the cheap Cabernet Sauvignon. How this HH could improve by offering more than just 3 appetizers items for half prize from the appetizer menu with their HH cocktail selections. But, this is just so-so not fabulous. I ordered 6 oysters each oyster was $1.50 but they were like McDonald's happy meal version. I complained to the waiter that served me there were not bad and for $1.50 each I expected better quality oysters which I had numerous times in the past. The waiter didn't say anything and no sorry or discount off. The food runner dropped off my appetizer but ran so dam quickly away without using his analytical brain skills. No cutlery and napkins do I can dig into my meal. When I return to Portsmouth from Nashua, NH as a day trip excursion I will definitely pass this place as I stated just so-so based on my patron review.
