I don't often review any restaurant but this particular experience was compelling enough to warn others. I placed a to-go order for two adults and two kids and politely asked the hostess to read the order back to me which she got correct. After driving 20 minutes to pick up the food I felt rushed out of there because the takeout orders, cashier register, and incoming done-in customers all had to flow through the same hostess desk. I simply put good faith that the two bags I was walking out with had the correct orders. By the time I got back to our hotel with two very hungry kids it became apparent that they didn't just get one part of the order wrong but multiple parts. They forgot the scrambled egg for one of my kids, charged me extra for a side of bacon when it came with one of the orders, completely forgot the corned beef hash, and the parfait came with a half a pound of granola with enough yogurt to fit in a ketchup container. The last part felt almost an insult or perhaps a major oversight if I'm giving the benefit of the doubt. I understand being in the service industry and getting overwhelmed but this was completely ridiculous. When I called back they told me that it wasn't part of the order to begin with even though I said the hostess read the order back to me correctly. Then they said that they could put the order together and it would be ready in 30 minutes. I told them I'm not going to drive 45 minutes RT when my kids are already cranky and hungry because they don't have their food. They did not want to refund the money or even deliver the rest of the order. Rather than try to argue with them any further I simply gave up and put something together for my kids. I have been a host, busser, and server in the past. If I was on the other end of that call I would have done the absolute most I could to rectify the situation rather than try to rush off the phone. Maybe society is just used to doing much less in 2023 but my recommendation to this restaurant is...

I work with disabled youths…Today I took my student with Autism to The Golden Egg Diner in Portsmouth, for lunch, for the first time, as we are working on life skills and tolerating change for him in the community, at different establishments. Often those with Autism are very resistant to trying new things and new places to interact in, and this keeps them from experiencing the enjoyment of life like so many people can. So it’s a huge deal for him to even agree to visit a restaurant. He always brings his lunch box with snacks and slowly has been willing to go eat at new places and try new things, though he likes to keep his snacks with him. We were told he could not eat there because of his water bottle and crackers and we were turned away at the front, by the hostess! She was unpleasant, cold and made my student feel confused, rejected and offended. Never will I bring anyone here, or recommend this establishment. I will make sure I tell people about the discrimination towards a youth with disabilities. An infant would not be turned away, with their parent, for having his bottle and crackers! SO WHY SHOULD THIS CHILD BE DIFFERENT??? The hostess at the front was told he had disabilities, and was abrupt...

Had breakfast today with 2 friends and I have to say it was one of the best breakfasts I've had in a long time... Everything was delicious and served hot...coffee was excellent and hot as well. I only mention the temp as I have had breakfast recently in other places and things were lukewarm and not served at the proper temperature.. I had the croissant breakfast sandwich and it was excellent. Our server was excellent as well.. And for additional entertainment we had Ryan to lighten the mood for everyone.. I would recommend the Golden Egg to anyone looking for good food at a good price.. I know you won't be disappointed.. I plan on recommending it to my friends and I look forward to returning as soon as possible... A great start to the day for me and my 2 friends.. We thoroughly enjoyed everything and felt welcomed by the entire staff.. And kudos to the cook.. The food was top notch, especially the home fries...they weren't deep fried but old school prepared.. My only disappointment was that I didn't ask for an additional serving as they were perfectly cooked and seasoned..I will be sure to do that on my next visit.. So glad the "Golden Egg" has returned in such a...

Well, my husband and I have a new favorite breakfast spot! This restaurant is very cozy, and the staff is warm and inviting. It is tucked away from the main hustle and bustle of Portsmouth, but it is worth going out of the way for. We came in on a Sunday and were sat down within five minutes. The list of specials all sounded delicious. My waffle special really hit the spot with coconut flakes and raspberries. I also enjoyed taking a few bites of my husband's Roma Omelette - stuffed with Italian Sausage peppers and onions. I will be sure to try some of their more savory options next time we visit. If you are ever in the area, stop in and support them - they are wonderful.

Right next to RT. 1A and the Sagamore bridge, open from 6am to 3pm, this restaurant has been open for about 25 years. Service and food were good! I had the eggs Loc Ness, egg benedict with smoked salmon and chopped scallions on a Thomas's English muffin, and a side of grilled home fries. Fresh baked muffins, cake and pies, bagels, glutten free 🍞 and muffins, fresh squeezed oj and Wifi available. Parking can be limited so get there early. Seating for small children and large groups available. Going for a drive along the coast, during the sunrise and high tide, is the best dessert!

The food was fine it definitely hit the spot. However the menu was misleading. The Monte Cristo said it came with maple syrup. What actually came to the table though was corn syrup. This is New England and the expectation is to have real maple syrup. So please update the menu to say just “syrup” or “corn syrup”. I’d be happy to pay a surcharge to have the real stuff. On another note the service was fast and the waitress was nice. Nice to have this Portsmouth institution back but it doesn’t hold a candle to Colby’s.
