So today was my first visit and I have to say I loved it. So its located on main street in an old building like it's been there since the 50s. Inside though it's another story, fresh and genuine decor that is eclectic yet works well. The restaurant is surprisingly very clean...well spotless to be honest. I just imagined this old place that has great food but had seen better days two decades ago. The restaurant is cool for the hot day and the added room in the back ensures he doesn't run out space.
Don't get me wrong...the fact that it's spotless sure didn't detract from the deliciousness of the food.
We strolled in about 15 mins after they opened for lunch on a Wednesday with a group of 6. Uncle Mick is behind the counter accompanied by a smiling and delightful women and they greets us like old friends. Uncle Mick is beaming with excitement for you to sample what he has going on behind the counter. He isn't shy about letting you taste things either...5 samples later I settle on some crawfish etouffee and creme shrimp both over rice with dirty rice, creole potato salad, cornbread, and garlic toast. To be honest I couldn't really decide what was better among the five samples so I just went with the popular ones among my friends.
So ill confess it's been twenty years since I spent any time along the MS/LA coast but boy I don't remember anything like that. So don't miss out on the chance to double down on the selections...it doesn't cost extra.
Everything was perfectly done...I could clearly taste the Crawfish in the etouffee and the creme shrimp was creamy and perfect for dipping the cornbread into. Dirty rice was heaven, and don't tell anyone but I liked their potato salad better then moms.
I just wished I lived closer then 200 miles...or maybe the 200 miles keeps off the 200 lbs I'd be gaining eating at...
Read moreI've read the reviews and tried hard to find the "why". It could be blind loyalty which is the case in some of the reviews. I consult restaurants and develop menus and marketing and the first thing I tell an owner , "people will never forget leaving hungry, and they'll always remember if they had leftovers". In this case, we left hungry. I watched the staff carefully measure every spoon full when they placed meal selections in what appeared to be the smallest possible containers you can find on the market. They literally shake the spoon in order to minimize how much they place into the container. I'll never forget that. We fed a party of 4 and one member of the party had a plate the rest had styrofoam containers of product, essentially what amounted to soups, all liquid with minimal amounts of protein, heavy rice and beans based, high in volume low in protein, total cost of the meal was $50, we left hungry. The menu is primarily liquid based very little meat, I had a "chicken/sausage piquant" and I believe this was an 8 oz. container. It was almost all liquid, rice at the bottom and I counted 5 pieces of tiny cubed chicken and a couple of pieces of sausage. My recommendation for including this restaurant in your dining plans would be to stop here as an appetizer and then head somewhere different to get your protein. The food has great flavor and based on the samples is scratch made, the little cornbread cakes we're excellent. Friendly staff and you can tell it is a family run operation with direct owner involvement. It's difficult to please everyone so my review is fact based and non-emotional, I do not own a restaurant nor do I live in the market. I was in Prattville on business that was not restaurant related and chose this location because I do not eat at chain...
Read moreAbsolutely incredible little Cajun place in Prattville, AL! I was here with a friend while spending the day in town and I must say -- if you've got the chance, you MUST GO! Uncle Mick is likely the guy dishing up your food. I quite love that fact since now days you rarely meet restaurant owners. The place is called at lunchtime with regulars and visitors alike, but don't worry -- it's quiet a spacious shop. When Uncle Mick heard it was my first time, he immediately began preparing small sample cups with the various Cajun gumbo's, stews, curries, etc. It was a kind gesture and I was immediately sold on the first two I tried -- Shrimp al la Crème and Pork Tenderloin with a white wine sauce (curry -- maybe there's a better Cajun word for this but I don't know it). For sides I has TRULY some of the most incredible green beans imaginable. I would love to get employed just to steal that recipe, let alone all the other great dishes. I was prepared to drink the green bean liquid it was so good; decadent, with big pieces of ham, well spiced but amenable for all taste buds. This place was absolutely perfect!!!!
Now as a Georgian, we might do a few things differently. My only thing I found curious was the Sweet Tea was only just "sweet." Maybe they do that to accommodate more taste buds or to help combat our rash of diabetics south of the Mason-Dixon, or maybe it was that particular batch. But that's certainly nothing to stress over. Would I add more sugar? Sure. But like I said -- small stuff!
Please please please give this place a try!! I promise when traveling next time, if I'm even remotely close and have the time, I'll be...
