We finally gave in and tried Tulum after driving by it for months. We had high hopes—it looks nice from the outside, and we were really rooting for it. But wow… this place was a disaster from the moment the food hit the table.
First, let me say our waitress was nice and honestly the only redeeming part of the experience. Unfortunately, no amount of great service could save the food.
We ordered four meals: quesadillas, enchiladas de mole, a cheeseburger, and sopa de res. Right off the bat, things were weird. The sopa de res came with rice AND beans? since when? Not the end of the world, but okay. Except the beans were so dry... the rice, tasted okay except the random hard bits. The cheeseburger was dry flavorless, and sad. I've had better at BK. The Enchiladas de mole was smothered in a mole sauce that was aggressively spicy and completely overpowered the dish. I tried to eat around it, but there was no escaping it.... now the Sopa de res.... The worst offender. It came with an oil slick on top and was completely tasteless. It honestly looked gross. My husband tried to power through a few spoonfuls but gave up quickly.
None of us enjoyed our food, and it was obvious—we barely touched any of it. We were honest with the waitress and said the food wasn’t good and we didn’t want any to-go containers and asked for the check. The waitress apologized for the experience and insisted in calling the manager over to speak to us.... who turned out to be the cherry on top of this disappointment sundae.
The manager was completely indifferent. No apology, no concern, no “let me make it right.” Just a blank stare and a full check. She didn’t even consider comping a single item, even though it was clear we were unhappy and left nearly everything untouched. She was basically "sorry not sorry" and quickly grabbed our debit card and ran it, and wished us a good night.
And to top it all off? My daughter got a terrible stomach ache not long after we left. We’re talking curled-up-on-the-couch miserable. That was the final straw.
So yeah—Tulum? Never again. Between the bad food, the lack of care from management, and the literal stomach pain it caused, we’re done. Spend your money somewhere that values their customers and knows...
Read moreWent there for the first time yesterday and got the chips and fresh guac and birria tacos. Birrias tacos come with yellow rice and pinto beans and two salsas to dip the tacos in (green and red). Everything was delicious (pinto beans were a little on the plain side but ok) Waiter was very friendly and attentive. Girl who had to make the fresh guac came to the side of our table with a little cart and prepared it in front of us she was not very friendly and looked like she dreaded being there though. Also, they do not give you complimentary chips and salsa at the start before you order like some other Mexican restaurants (you have to pay for it) and the portion sizes are on the smaller side compared to other Mexican places especially for the birria tacos which looked like minis and the rice and bean portions with it were in two tiny cups. Other than this, it...
