Taqueria La Penca Mexican Restaurant — Restaurant in Proviso Township

This place was not good. We just went today. The food was so bland. Absolutely no flavor at all. The food was also room temperature at best. Nothing was cooked fresh. I ordered the Pollo Guisado and it was cold, watery, and no flavor not even salt. My husband had the carne asada again no flavor not even salt. The steak was basically thrown on the grill as is and served. The beans taste of a can. The rice was also tasteless. Even the chips and salsa they serve you when you sit down were horrible. Salsa was watery and again no flavor. The chips were so stale. This was our 1st time here and it will be our last. Even our server didn't look happy to be there. Sucks because we live so close & we had high hopes since they have 4.4 stars. Maybe at some point they had good food but not anymore. 0 out of 10...

I forgot to set up some catering for my twins 18th birthday. Scrambling, I remembered eating here once before and loved the food. So I rolled the dice that the catering would be just as good. I came in on Saturday asking if they could do a catering package for 20 by Sunday at 5:30. The gentleman assured me that this would not be a problem and helped me order what he said would be the best package. Sunday at exactly 5:30 my box of food was ready when I went to pick it up. 25 minutes later, everything set up in my kitchen ready to go. Everything still hot and most importantly DELICIOUS!!! Everyone asked where I got the food from. More than enough for 22 people with good sized appetites. La Penca is now my go to Mexican restaurant for meals...

Holy cow. Its sad I gotta write this, but I'm new in the area. I come from Berwyn. Mexican restaurants near my old house are Zacatacos, El Meson, El Faro, Taco Burrito King. Last night I wanted something close to my new house and this place popped up. So I went. Let me tell you, I will never go back. Food was garbage ESPECIALLY the taco de Chile Relleno. It was the worse chile relleno I've ever had. Im not exaggerating either. This place looks so nice to have crappy food. I spent over $20 just for me and I so regret it. I guess I have to drive down to Berwyn for good...
