I had my first experience with this restaurant last night and I couldn't have been more shocked at the sudden whiplash of an enjoyable new experience becoming an incredibly uncomfortable one that makes me never want to return.
When we first came in there was no host behind the counter and the restaurant was mostly empty, though a friendly server very quickly noticed my wife and I, so it didn't seem to be important to me at the time. The server brought us to our table, which was covered in plates and he removed a couple of plates from the table before leaving. He did not explain that the items left on the table were supposed to be there, leaving my wife and I to stand awkwardly next to the table waiting for him to come back before a different server explained that the table was pre-set with sauces and side items.
We ordered the premium "all you can eat" menu (what they called menu B) and our first round of meats (beef bulgogi, beef brisket, beef tongue and ribeye). Finishing that first round (aside from half of the ribeye), and we ordered a few more plates (pork thin belly, short rib steak and la galbi). We started getting full and only finished about half of our second round of plates before asking for the check.
Overall the experience had been a fun, new experience for us, right up until we asked for the check, this is when our experience became very uncomfortable and it felt as if the restaurant was taking advantage of us. The server looked at our table, got very wide eyed and looked very uncomfortable before saying he had to go talk to his manager. Returning to ask if we had ever been there before, to which we explained we hadn't and he went back to talk to his manager once again. When he came back again, he told us that the extra food would usually amount to us having to pay for another whole person but that he said he'd taken care of it before shuffling a couple of our plates away to the back, returned and said "now you're out of extra charge range" before going to get our check.
When he arrives with the check, he also informs us that an 18% gratuity had already been added to our check and tells us to have a nice night and remember to order less for next time. This is where I feel having a host at the front would have helped, as they could have asked if we'd ever visited before and if we were familiar with how the "all you can eat" menu could incur additional charges. Our server could have very easily asked at the beginning of our order if it was our first visit, instead of making us feel very uncomfortable and ashamed that we didn't "eat everything we ordered", when we had no idea how much food came with anything we were ordering. Beyond that, nowhere on their website or on the menu itself, does the "premium all you can eat" menu state that gratuity will be automatically added to the bill for a party of 2.
I know the server was simply doing his job. I do not blame him for the awkwardness toward the end. He seemed very uncomfortable suddenly springing on us that we might have to pay for another person. My complaint is with management for not having some sort of indication there could be an additional charge if you do not consume 80%+ of what you order. As well as management choosing to obfuscate the automatic 18% gratuity.
Additional notes on the overall experience.
The "premium" cuts of meat were far from premium. There was a very high fat content in the shortrib that made it very chewy and unenjoyable. Some of the other cuts of meat were so thin and fatty that they didn't do anything but stick to the grill (we had 3 or 4 griddle changes in 1.5 hours).
There's no real atmosphere to speak of. The walls are all bland white with no decoration with some Korean music playing on the radio. There is nothing "wrong" there, simply that the "waiting room/strip mall" vibe doesn't quite align with a $120 dinner for 2.
Our server didn't ask us if we had any questions about items on the menu, if we'd ever been to a location like this before, etc. He simply took our order and brought out...
Read moreWorst customer service experience ever!!! My ribs were a little under cook. Happens right? So I asked one of the girls if they could just hear them up for me. Then the manager comes out pissed off!he starts a fight with me saying that's how the ribs are supposed to look and he refused to reheat them!! I had my two little girls with me and he start kept screaming at us in his restaurant. It was unbelievable!! Like out of the twilight zone. I even tried to reason with him. I mean the food is good I didn't think I was asking for much. He continued to yell that at us that asking me what I wanted and he is tired of customers complaining about his ribs. Wow!!!! He just wasn't understanding I simply one a reheat. I felt like extremely uncomfortable and I'm pregnant. Very cautious about raw foods. I explained this to him and still he refused to reheat my food or proved a refun for the rib plates. I bought two. My little girls just sat there as he continued to argue with me. I tried to gather the rest of my salad since heck I paused for it and he wouldn't let us leave. He sat down and continued to argued about the ribs. He told me I didn't know a thing about smoking meat. Lol well I'm from Texas , 30 plus years and damn well know about smoke rings. Again, I wasn't even upset just wanted a reheat!!! Unbelievable. I don't know if he was having a bad day but man he decided to take it out on a pregnant lady and two little...
Read moreReading other people's reviews, it appears that this place is hit or miss. My experience was positive, and the restaurant was pretty full when I went (about 11:30am on a Tuesday). The BBQ sauces they have are not bad; my favorite was the one in the yellow bottle although they're all pretty decent.
The pulled pork was very solid. It was very moist and I ate all of the pulled pork without any BBQ sauce. I have been to a lot of BBQ places where the pulled pork is super dry and doesn't have much flavor to it, so in order to make it decent it needs to be slathered in BBQ sauce.
The sausage wasn't bad. There was a very light spiciness to it, although it was a little tough. The brisket was not that good; it was a little dry and didn't have any flavor to it. I ate it with BBQ sauce because it was not that good on its own.
The mac & cheese was decent. It was pretty creamy although it had a name brand taste to it (maybe Kraft?). It still wasn't terrible though, although I have had much better mac & cheese at other restaurants. The beans were pretty decent too. They have a slightly sweet taste to them (maybe brown sugar?). They were also on the harder end, although it wasn't a huge deal for me. If they were slightly softer though, they would've been really good.
The 3 meat plate is a little overpriced for the quality of the food and amount you get but at the end of the day it's a pretty...
