Char Grill has been an institution in Raleigh since the1960's and I like thier burgers because I grew up on them. The food is good but not exceptional, especially considering the price. There are better burgers, to be sure but Char Grill has been part of the growing up experience for almost everyone who is from here so we seem to have to go back there periodically to reafirm a part of our local identity. Don't get me wrong, a Hamburger Steak Sandwich is not only tasty, but also satisfying and very filling and the fries are good and done to perfection almost every time, but because it's become a "thing" the prices have gone up and up and there just isn't a whole lot of variety in the burgers. There isn't a mushroom and Swiss burger or a BBQ burger or any variation on the basic theme except for size. You can get cheese, or not or bacon or onions, etc. but the burgers there are pretty old school and all are similar. The shakes are large and small, chocolate and vanilla and are soft serve, but pretty good. There are better, but they, too are part of the experience. If you've never had Char Grill you should, at least once just because it's unique to the area and it's something that's part of the local conciseness and comes up in conversation among us natives. It's always good to be...

I would recommend that you do not attempt to call your order into this location. I had hoped to save time but really it just cost me another 15 minutes. Limited English speaking skills resulted in the order being recorded incorrectly. (And there was confusion apparent for the people picking up their food in front of me as well... taking time to resolve) To their credit, everyone was very courteous in resolving the issue (I got the feeling everyone was stressed out in there but doing their best), and they expedited my corrected order (though they then lost track of which of the waiting people it was for). My perception was that it was pretty chaotic in there - not the well-oiled machine to which I am accustomed at Char Grill. The food was fine though. Maybe it was just a bad night. I'm check back and update this review just in case

Also note that this is an outdoor only, walk up restaurant with no indoor seating (I was getting take out). Not a criticism, but since some Char Grill locations have indoor seating, it seemed...

This store hits the right strides in food preparation, delivery, and taste every single visit. I'm never disappointed.

I typically order the quarter-pound steak burger with fries. I add lettuce, bacon, cheese, and mayonnaise, and I add pepper after I receive it. The burger is always cooked to perfection. I have yet to have a bad order of fries here, but that's not the good part. The fries are super-hot, perfectly salted, and absolutely delicious. I wish they offered a large fries option. Even so, they do put a generous helping of fries into the bag. (McDonald's, take note!)

My meal is always properly prepared, perfectly cooked, and served in a very reasonable time.

Be sure to park under the trees to the left of the restaurant to keep your car cool in the hot summer days! While there is some picnic-styled seating, I always get my meal to go as I live about 1-1/2 miles from this restaurant.

I'm always looking forward to visiting here, and I can hardly...

Stopped by Char-Grill on a whim and ordered a hamburger with everything, a double cheeseburger, and a side of fries—because why not go all in? First impression: the burgers were a bit smaller than I imagined… but then I took a bite and BOOM—flavor explosion! These little guys pack a serious punch. The double cheeseburger was juicy, cheesy perfection, and the fries? Crispy, golden, and dangerously addictive. But what really makes Char-Grill shine is the vibe. It’s not just a place to eat—it’s a whole experience. The outdoor space is wide open, full of greenery and life. It’s the kind of spot where you want to kick back, soak in the atmosphere, and forget you ever heard of boring indoor dining. Flavor, fries, and fresh air? Count me in. Highly recommend this place if you’re craving something tasty in a super chill setting.

Char-Grill is one of the best spots for hot dogs and hamburgers in Raleigh! I grew up eating here and Cook Out, and coming back during my visit to the city brought back so many memories. I had to stop by—and I’m so glad I did! I ordered a chili hot dog (absolutely delicious), crispy seasoned fries, and a Char-Grill hamburger—the meat was flavorful and cooked just right. Everything tasted just as amazing as I remembered. One thing that sets Char-Grill apart is their old-school ordering system: grab a pencil, fill out your order slip, and slide it through the window—no talking needed! That’s the charm of Char-Grill in my opinion. If you’re ever in Raleigh and craving a good burger or hot dog, do yourself a favor and stop by Char-Grill. It’s a true local gem!

Overall: 3.9 / 10 The unique way to order with a paper ticket and slide it down the shoot, wait outside, watch them grill the burger… It’s all a great experience. The smell of the burgers being cooked hooks a person into wanting a burger. The burger itself was more of a let down. This isn’t the first time here so maybe a bad day but based on what was received for this experience, it wasn’t good at all. The steak sandwich was just thrown away after looking at it. The char burger was not great at all. The bacon looks like a cheap microwaved brand. The fries were fine and just average.
