Kampai Sushi — Restaurant in Redding

Well, I hate to say this because kampai is our top favorite sushi place in Redding. However during our visit tonight we we're greatly disappointed. We were one of 2 patrons. 4 adults and 2 children. Upon being seated we were asked if we'd like drink's, our waitress took 1 drink order (my husband) and disappeared. When she finally came back and we ordered drinks I ordered a lemonade for my toddler which was brought in a giant adult size cup, so I asked for a smaller cup for him. It took over a half an hour to receive the cup for him. We placed our orders, and waited. Almost 2 hours. We were told there were only 2 people there , but patrons who came in after us were being served while we waited. Food was brought to us finally ice cold, and incorrect. Our waitress must have had something on her mind because simple requests were either ignored, or done wrong. We will visit kampai in the future again, because we can only hope that this was a fluke. But please if you were our server , you will remember us as we left without even receiving all of our food. Try to be attentive to your customers, listen to then when they ask for something, take pride in having great service and doing your best for your customers. Make sure they feel like you are hustling if you are short staffed. Don't make them feel like a burden because of a staffing issue. And if you only have 1 cook, at least be sure what's being sent out matches the ticket for the paying customers who sat waiting for an obscene...

We really enjoyed this place and the food. I do look forward to returning, but it did really take a long time to get our food. We were the only customers here and ordered 3 sushi rolls and one teriyaki veggies dish. After ordering it was a good 40 minutes until we got the food. We realized the cook was out of the kitchen a chunk of the time looking at videos on a friend's phone that was not working there. When the boss would go check things out he'd meander back towards the kitchen. However, the food when it finally did arrive was SO good. They made a wonderful rainbow roll (our kids' favorite meal), my husband liked his rolls and I really enjoyed my chicken teriyaki bento meal. It came with a soup and little salad that had the yummiest dressing I've ever had on it and plenty of food to be full. Very reasonable prices too. We even ordered TEMPURA BANANA with whipped cream and oh man, it was so so good. So while the service and timing could be worked on, the food was definitely worth it! We just have to schedule more time out of the day to go back. I also heard that sometime around April 2024 they will be closed for a month. They had some good music on that helped the time pass....

I don't really like to leave negative reviews. But this experience wasn't the best. I took my daughter out for sushi and our calamari tasted like burnt and old oil and everythibg my daughter ordered (a bento box) was bland and kinda gross. Even her soda didn't taste right. She didnt eat much of it. when my sushi came out it smelt ROTTEN. I couldn't figure out the smell was. But it was something in the food. I still tried to eat it and the sushi itself tasted fine but I ended up just not finishing the rest. I'm pretty sure it was the ginger but I'm not sure. I'm not the type to make a fuss so we paid and left. I feel like I should of said something but I just felt really uncomfortable It just wasn't a good experience. Luckily we didn't get sick. The man who greeted us was kind and friendly. And I just kinda felt bad. I'm new to the area so I didn't know if they were just falling on hard times. But it's just felt sad. I will not be returning. I was just surprised at the quality especially for how much it ended up costing. Which really is a bummer because the photos looked amazing and I have read other reviews of people having great...
