Terrible service from front to back.
Very disappointing for a new spot we had been waiting for to open.
Got there Friday night, second in line behind another party. The front desk was busy with what seemed like takeout orders as there were bags all over. No prob. No one had addressed the party in front of us, so we waited, figured we'd all put our names down soon. 20 minutes later, someone from the back of the line just walked up and gave his name to the lady at the desk. Us and the party first in line were like Whoa!, we've been here for 20 minutes and haven't been acknowledged!! The front desk lady seemed surprised, like we just showed up, whereas, we had been right up on the desk and in her face for the past 20 minutes. The first party was so offended, they left.
We put our name down as we were hungry and several tables were open. Some time later, our name was called, and we had to convince the lady that it was our name. She huffed and told us to go sit over there, pointing to a distant table. The "hostess" didn't bother to walk us to our table, and we seated ourselves.
We managed to get some menus. Cue another 30 minutes and I had to flag someone down as everyone was running around with blinders on avoiding eye contact. He said he'd be right with us, and we never saw him again for the rest of the night.
We finally got someone, who pre-warned us that food would take a while. Oh, and by the way, there's a whole separate checklist for sushi rolls to order, which she gave us. So, all that time wasted on the other menu, when we were just looking for basic rolls.
We got another waitress and since we were starving, we just get some salads. We got a ramen bowl several minutes later. Good thing, as we continued to wait another 25min when our waitress came back saying our food would come out soon as they got busy with take out orders. Why those orders got precedence over sitting customers that have been there an hour plus, I don't know.
Finally, the sushi came out. Mostly decent, but one roll was bad. Then, we were excited for mango ice cream, but of course, they were out. Had other flavors instead, pretty basic.
We were done, and were waiting for our waitress to get the rest boxed and the check. Cue another 30min as our waitress was hanging by the bar tables the whole time.
Finally had to flag another person down for to-go containers. Got a generic soup container, whereas others were getting nice black containers for their ramen. Whatever.
More minutes later, still no original waitress, so flagged the other lady again for the check. Of course, got some other tables check. Waited more for our check. Of course, the bad roll wasn't removed as promised. Had to get that fixed. Finally wrapped up and couldn't wait to leave. 2.5 hours later for 5 simple rolls, one bowl of ramen, and some salads and ice cream.
Service was horrendous and unorganized. The place was not too crowded and there were plenty of...
Read moreMatsutake is sort of a hidden gem, sitting in a converted fast-food restaurant in a small mall just off Reston Parkway. There are a number of decent restaurants in such locations and this is the only one where the designers have managed to completely banish the sterile fast food feel - it's a lovely place where you can relax and enjoy. As others have said the food is very good - although at the top end of my personal price range. The cocktail menu is particularly notable, consisting of truly unique drinks invented and whimsically named by the bartender. Don't let the goofy names dissuade you - they are excellent. And if you have ever wondered whether there's such a thing as Japanese craft beer, yes there is and they have several.
My only quibble is that the owners seem spread a bit thin. Sometimes the bartender is not there on weekdays. Sometimes the service is wonderful and friendly, other times not so much. So consistency is the last box they have to check. Based on about a dozen visits they have far more good nights than bad nights, but at the relatively high price point this should not be a worry...
Read moreWe had a rather unpleasant experience while dining at this restaurant. There was only one older waitress serving the entire restaurant, with just four tables of customers, including ours. While we understand that she might have been busy as the sole staff member, her attitude was disappointing.
When I politely asked for a cup of hot water, she appeared visibly impatient and directly told me that I would have to wait. Although I understood she was busy, her demeanor made the situation uncomfortable. After waiting for about ten minutes, she finally came to serve us, but her attitude remained unpleasant. What was even more surprising was that she made some disrespectful remarks in Korean after serving us.
For a restaurant with relatively high prices, customers should be able to expect respectful and courteous service. I sincerely hope the management will take this feedback seriously and provide further training to ensure a better dining experience for future customers. If a similar situation occurs again, I would...
