All I have to say; the bartenders and servers are friendly and charming. The food is great and so are the cocktails. The one star for atmosphere is not about the decor or vibes; it is a callout to the owners of Birdie's and Common House. You are stealing from your staff. Using the automatic gratuity and any extra tips to pay your payroll is not ok. There are restaurants in Richmond that have tried models of paying all workers the same wage in the name of egalitarianism, but the difference is that those restaurants choose to pay the same base rate to all employees and then, divide tips as an addition. The owners of Birdies use the automatic gratuity to fund the flat hourly wage they pay for the employees. They are given a flat hourly wage and no additional tip. That's right; the gratuity and tip that -you- the customer, give is used to fund the hourly wage Birdies pays their employees. I am a regular customer and I have paid attention to the exceptional service by a number of birdies bartenders. I want to tip for service and I would understand if the tips were divided equally among the staff in addition to the base hourly pay. But the reality is the gratuity and tip is used to pay the staff's hourly wage..:not to "tip" the staff. As a member of the service industry, I think it is outrageous that "gratuity" and "tips" that are given by customers are being funneled into common house and birdies in order to fund pay roll instead of going directly to the workers. If birdie's or commonhouse wants to make a point of paying their workers a fair wage; they -the company- should be the ones paying the wage. Using tips to pay the "equal" hourly wage is stealing from employees. I work a block away. And it's simple math; my worst day of tips plus hourly is worse than what Birdies employees are paid everyday. I guarantee the tips and automatic gratuity that commonhouse and Birdies take in from the labor of their amazing staff exceeds whatever Commonhouse/Birdies doles out to the same employees come pay day. I love birdies and have never had a bad experience. As a regular, I've noticed these details. No one has complained about this to me. But I have been to birdies over and over and...
Read moreMy best friend and her family and I came to Birdies on Friday, Nov 25 after her and I came a few days before and we loved it so much, we wanted to bring her family. We received the worst customer service and did not feel like we were welcomed into the establishment. It was around 130pm and Birdies was not packed however they told us since we did not have a reservation - we can sit at the bar. That’s fine. We set at the bar, and the server took 20 min to bring us waters and menus and then she left. She did not come back for another 20 min even though I was looking straight at her. It seemed as if she was intentionally ignoring us. The man who was shucking oysters went over to the what I assume is a sorry excuse of a manager and started whispering to him and looking at us. The “manager” came over and told us we were blocking the area where servers take the food to the people in a very rude manner. First of all - we did not know that food went out that way and second he could have told us nicely. We stated that we did not feel welcomed whatsoever and felt like we were in the way and the server and manager just stared at us and we were forced to leave the establishment. PLEASE learn manners and how to treat your repeat customers right.
There was no reason for us to be treated this way. Half of the restaurant was empty when we walked in. Very lazy servers and a terrible...
