One of the most notable aspects of this establishment is its charming and inviting atmosphere. The eclectic decor, which is full of whimsy and nods to Richmond, sets the tone for a fun and relaxed experience.
Location: The location of this hotel was perfect for my purposes, I was in town for a conference and the conference center was three blocks away so it was easy to arrive on time and pop back quickly if needed. There were also plenty of varied restaurants within walking distance. Plus as a runner I was 3 to 4 blocks from an amazing (bike/running) path system that connected several parks.
Rooms: The room was basic and for the price point I was not surprised. There was quirky art and fun features that made the room usable, but I was mostly there to sleep. Housekeeping came in once during my stay and swapped towels, but didn't appear to do much other cleaning as all the debris from my shoes was still at the door. There was no coffee in the room but you could pop down to the lobby and they may have coffee ready. I found it was available about 50% of the time when I was leaving between 8:15 and 8:45am. There was also a sign in the room that said you could request a mini fridge, I called the front desk and was told someone would be right up with a fridge for me! Great! An hour later I called back and told them I would still like the fridge and to feel free to drop it in the room as I needed to leave. He told me it would be in the room waiting when I got back. When I returned, there was still no fridge so I popped downstairs to the desk/bar to follow up and I was informed they were out of fridges and I would be unable to get one for my stay and she apologized for the misunderstanding. The problem was not that I could get a fridge, but it was the runaround.
Service: My issue with the service was only one individual on the staff who's name I did not get as I avoided him as much as possible because he was rude and sneered most of the time that he saw me. I do not know if his outward behavior was based on our first meeting; I arrived very early to attend the first day of the conference and asked if there was possibly a room ready at 8:00am. He told me absolutely not! When I followed up on when a room may be available, I was told maybe 2:00pm. I then inquired about valet or parking and he told me there was no valet and that he didn't recommend street parking. He did not however mention that the hotel had an agreement with the parking deck next to the hotel, so I spent an extra $10 a day for the first 2 days until one of the other bartenders told me about the parking arrangement in the garage where I was already parked. This worker would glare at me on the stairs in the mornings as I came down through a little window from behind the bar. It made me feel incredibly uncomfortable. Beyond him, the rest of the staff I had an opportunity to interact with were a delight. It seemed everyone else greeted me upon entering and would frequently inquire if I needed anything. One day one of the ladies got a small group to cheer for me as I was coming back from my run. They created a fun atmosphere.
As you can see I had a very mixed experience during my stay at the Moxy. I was there for 5 days/4 nights and as a Titanium Elite Bonvoy member I found that to be quite...
Read moreAMAZING service. The staff seemed to actually enjoy being there. We were even entertained that evening by one of the front desk attendant’s karaoke performance! I was too chicken to sing xD
Our room (719) smelled strongly of farts. It was like somebody had laid a juicy gas-filled balloon of stink on every cloth-covered surface in our room. We couldn’t tell where it was coming from and, thankfully, didn’t spend much time in the room. We didn’t report the issue because we knew they couldn’t do anything about it and we didn’t come to Galaxy Con to fight with our hotel the entire weekend. The smell dissipated somewhat by the time we left, but was still definitely there.
They told us parking was available in this VERY SMALL parking garage next door. Parking anything larger than a standard SUV would be extremely dicey. If you’re driving up or down the ramp and encounter a car in the opposite direction, there is not enough room for you both to get by. I had to back into spots and corners to let people through. If you aren’t very confident in your ability to maneuver your vehicle in tight spaces, don’t even think about parking here.
After checking out, we attempted to exit the garage, but the posted instructions didn’t work. We called the number and pressed option “3” multiple times. Then the attendant asked where our ticket was, even though he should know that hotel guests don’t get a ticket. We were told by the Moxy staff that we only had to call the number, press option 3 and then the gate would open. We sat there for at least 10 minutes with cars piling up behind us, while the attendant called other people who also had no idea what was going on. He finally made us BACK UP so we could use a different exit. So, rest assured that they have NOT fixed the issue. Avoid this parking structure. It’s not worth the trouble.
It’s a shame I can’t give 5 stars. But that parking situation sent me reeling.
I’d stay here again, but would rather park a mile away and have to walk all my luggage to the hotel than deal with that awful...
Read moreI enjoyed my stay at the Moxy. It embodies the essence of a boutique hotel: small, intimate, and quaint experience. The Moxy's aesthetic is hip, modern a night life like atmosphere. The location is downtown in a historic building. The building is older so you are going to visually see that in some aspects, but to me, that adds character and isn't an issue. Because this building is older and designated historic, it is going to come with old building problems and with the historic designation sometimes those problems take a while to fix. The staff is very friendly and there is information available about what to do and experience in Richmond.
If you are looking for a more typical hotel experience, I would suggest your regular big brand hotel chains. If you like a more personalized intimate experience then the Moxy is a hotel I would recommend.
I only stayed one night and I had a queen bed room and I liked it. It was stylish and decorated nicely. While the space in the room was smaller, the bathroom was a nice size. There was a small desk on one side of the bed and a stool on the other side. There are black out curtains. There is no closet but there are pegs along the wall with hangers if you need to hang anything and a luggage stand. The room was clean and I had no issues at all. I was told some rooms have mini fridges but I cannot remember if mine did since I wasn't looking and didn't need it.
All in all I would stay here again for a night or long weekend. I only gave 4 stars because the service in the evening was a bit slow, but she was still very friendly and nice. And the parking garage which is next to the hotel is really sketch at night. I wish there was valet...
