China cafe — Restaurant in Riverside Township

I worked in a Chinese(Cantonese & Szechaun) restaurant in the early 1970’s outside Chicago and first learned to cook by handling the American food on the menu. I visited the two Chinese cook’s homes and Chinatown in Chicago. The menu was similar to the old, “Hong Kong” restaurant on south Seneca. I went through an annual, unannounced Health Department inspection usually at peak lunch time. I learned a lot about food surfaces, proper temperatures, and hygiene. This little, cash only, restaurant has fairly good tasting food. I have tried most of their items. HOWEVER, if the local Health Department visits, this business will be shut down IMMEDIATELY. There are old(very old) grease drippings that hang everywhere. The place is extremely filthy. Cooking area was filthy. Why did I return? Food is good and I noticed food preparation was handled correctly. Meat and vegetables were fresh. If the place had an extreme deep clean it may entice first time...

Okay, so we've been regular customers of China Cafe for more than three years. It's always been quick, hot, and most of the time good to very good. Tonight we ordered a Kung Pao Chicken and a Hunan Beef, our go to dishes. The Hunan Beef was swimming in a layer of clear oil, that had separated from the brown sauce. It truly was inedible. My wife drove back to Haysville to see if it could be remade, only to be told by the owner that there was nothing wrong, that it was not oil, just brown sauce. Keep in mind we eat this same dish 2 to 3 times a month! He hatefully refunded her money and told her "no more orders! Do not come back!" It stunned us. We've been good, regular customers, only to be verbally assaulted and told never to come back the first time we ever had a complaint of any kind. The people were nice, the food was cooked fresh. My grandmother and I ate here dine in, I ordered a meal to go for my husband at the same time I ordered dine in and they were thoughtful enough to wait to cook and give me the to go meal until we were almost done eating. My grandma and I both agreed that the food was delicious, very generous portions for the price. Very well priced. The best egg rolls and crab rangoon I have tasted ever. This is my new favorite...
