I really hate to give this place a poor review because I want local businesses to succeed but I also believe in providing constructive criticism. All I will say is, there is absolutely no way what I just tried to eat is the same food everyone else is giving these glowing reviews for. To preface, this review will be for the food only and will not include service or atmosphere as this was a delivery. I had been hesitant to try this place as a friend had told me she had a less than great experience here, but I told her maybe it was just an off day because this place had so many great reviews online and on the delivery apps however if I had the opportunity-- I would give it a try.
The good: Harumaki vegetable spring rolls - I really hope they make these in house because these were genuinely quite good. Would not change a thing. Excellent crispy texture and the filling was perfectly seasoned. Ramen noodle texture - standard thick noodles, cooked correctly not overdone or underdone. Baby bok choy - the crispness of the bok choy in the ramen was absolutely perfect and complimented the broth. It was (I'm guessing) blanched. Presentation of the sushi - There was definitely some thoughtfulness put into the arrangement of my two rolls. You tend to get pretty sloppy presentation with these fast casual sit down sushi places, but it was presented in an appealing way.
The bad: Spicy California roll - Filling to rice ratio was just not great. Way more rice than filling. The texture of the rice on this roll was off. Either the rice was overworked as it was seasoned so it made it a little gummy OR it was too old. Good sushi rice is best used within just a couple of hours of making it. The seasoning ratio was also a little odd---maybe a little too heavy handed with the vinegar and sugar. Overall flavor of the roll as a whole, was just OK. Every sushi place will have some kind of California roll and if you are going to do something simple and common, it should be made well in my opinion. This fell short. Shrimp roll - I immediately knew there was something wrong with this one. The coloring of the shrimp looked neither undercooked or overcooked---more like a dull faded color. Difficult to describe but cooking so much myself, I just knew there was something not right with the way it looked. If the look didn't give me enough indication, the immediate fishy smell and taste confirmed it. I knew I shouldn't have tasted it but silly me, I did, which warranted an immediate toss into the trash. The rice texture in this one was also worse than the other roll. The texture actually had a toughness and an alarming chew to it. Spicy chicken ramen - This had potential but was just way more of a miss than a hit for me. As I mentioned before the bok choy for me was the standout in the dish and the noodles were cooked well but that's where the positives end. The broth lacked overall depth, richness and I was not getting much chicken flavor at all. The chicken itself while soft and tender had an extremely strange flavor that I couldn't place. I do want it to be known I am absolutely not a picky eater. I grew up as a multi-culture kid, I've done tons of traveling as an adult, and I love trying new foods, but this just was just not for me. The flavors and seasoning on this chicken just did not agree with my palate unfortunately. The ramen egg was way overdone--hardboiled in fact. I live close to this location and the eggs are kept separate from the broth so I can't imagine it became overcooked on the travel over. I have never not finished a bowl of ramen before and so this was a first for me where I made it about halfway through before throwing the towel in.
I wholeheartedly believe that what everyone else says about the atmosphere and the service is true and that they are indeed fantastic, but I just cannot get behind the quality of the food served here. I am going to chalk it down perhaps other's limited experiences which is fair, but I personally cannot give a better rating as this was...
Read moreMy husband and I have been to several ramen places and I could tell you exactly what I like at each lol but this place seems to be reasonably priced and tastes better.
My husband and I love Hikari Sushi and Ramen in Haysville!
Selfishly I don't want to fight with a crowd but I feel like it's my responsibility to share and I would love to keep the place going even more lol. My husband said that they mentioned that they make their own homemade bases for the broth and I believe it! They are so tasty. The food even tastes amazing when you order it to go (I added 3 pictures of how they do ramen takeout) because they pack everything up really well. I have more pictures but I can't seem to find them all right now and I'll add them if I find more.
It's kid friendly too, some ramen places don't have a kids meal. My kids like the ramen, chicken nuggets, and fried rice.
My absolute favorite is the tonkatsu black ramen! I like to add bean sprouts. The pork falls apart and it's delicious.
Yesterday we tried something different. We tried the Bento Box and if you dine in it comes with complimentary miso soup. Everything was delicious. I got the Chashu Bento (pork) and my husband got the Beef Yakiniku Bento (grilled beef and onion). Kids got the chicken nuggets this time and they came out in these cute boat plates!
Other items we have tried and love: -the Shoyu ramen -california roll -Hollywood roll (this is my favorite it's the California roll with cream cheese added) -spicy tuna roll -beef yakisoba -gyoza -fried rice (it's good but we prefer the...
Read moreThis was our first time in and it was an amazing experience! Located right along the main drag of Seneca in Haysville with convenient parking. The restaurant was decorated in beautiful lights and Asian decor. We were promptly seated and given menus, which feature a wide variety of Japanese inspired appetizers, dishes and sushi. Today we decided to try one of their salads and a couple of bento boxes. My wife got the Kani salad, which is shredded crab, frisee, mayo, and eel sauce. It was fresh and delicious! I highly recommend it, it's almost like a sushi salad. I got the Beef Yakiniku and my wife got the Chasu pork bento boxes. Each Bento box comes with a gyoza (fried dumpling) a harumaki (fried spring roll similar to lumpia) 4 pieces of California roll sushi, white rice (which was amazing) and your entree. If you dine in, you also get a complimentary miso soup (DELICIOUS!) with your Bento box. My Beef Yakiniku was tender, with onions and a brown sauce and instantly a favorite, almost like Asian comfort food. The Chasu pork was so juicy and flavorful with just the right amount of fat and crisp in every bite, instantly my wife's favorite. The prices are decent, the atmosphere is beautiful and relaxing, the staff friendly and efficient, and the food was superb! If you're looking for a decent priced Japanese meal, or even if you're looking for good sushi, I highly recommend giving them a try! We will definitely be...
