The very first place I ate sushi, was here at Akashi, while a senior at Wright State University (many, many, many years ago). Tonight, we were driving to dinner, somewhere else, and decided to eat here instead. The woman, Meg, seated us, with very few words. She ended up being our waitress, she came back and offered us water, I asked for lemon for my water. I asked about ten minutes later, she never brought it. I asked a waiter who stopped by to give us more water and he brought some right out. She did ask us if we were ready to order, we wanted to look at the menu. She came back, I asked a question, she left when she returned we ordered. We ordered the grilled smelt appetizer. My husband ordered Rainbow roll and I ordered Gangnom Roll. After waiting a while, she walked by and told us our sushi was about to come out. I asked about our appetizer, she said, "oh, you don't want that with your meal?" So, she brought it all out together. The grilled smelt was super dry. I dipped it in my soy sauce. I will admit, I did not eat the smelt head. I took that off. The rolls were good and plated well. Now, I understand service is lacking due to reduced staff, but I feel like this was just an excuse for her to give bad service. The other wait staff, were on top of their tables and even stopped by ours without us asking them to. Since this is where I ate my first sushi, I will have to go back, give another chance for the service to match the food.

The other reviews for this place seemed really promising and I pass this place daily so I thought it'd be nice to treat myself to a place people are calling the best in dayton but I am really disappointed. My $15 sushi roll (samurai) was really tiny and for some reason saran wrapped with all its sauces on it? The kagaare chicken was SUPER dry and old looking, there was hardly any food and it was $18. They forgot my onigiri and my mochi and I had to drive back. Did not offer any kind of comp for this and acted a little like the mochi was my fault. The people who helped me were actually really great which makes this even more disappointing. The onigiri they did give me had the wrong filling. The seaweed was also wet which is weird. For some reason the mochi is cut into quarters??? Also really small for the price. Not sure why they cut it, just makes that fact worse. They gave me everything in separate bags and i ended up with 4 different bags at home and the two entrees (sushi and chicken) were so small they didn't even make sense in the normal entree-sized boxes they came in. Basically I spent $64 trying to have a nice meal for once and instead wasted my money when I could have gotten something much better and higher quality for less at one of their competitors. Maybe we need to try sitting down and not take-out, but good food (and really, even just-okay food) should not be dependent on coming in when you offer take-out.

I've been to a lot of Asian-inspired restaurants within the region, but I've never experienced an establishment like Akashi. *EDIT* I had to deduct one star because on a recent visit with my two kids, my bill was $10 higher ($85 before tip) than usual, despite my son ordering a less expensive dish. Prices have gone up... and that sucks to be honest. *EDIT* (They used to offer the following, but they removed it from the menu...) The best time to go [for sushi] is Monday through Thursday when there is a buy one, get the 2nd half off special. I personally go for the Akashi and Rainbow rolls (adding cream cheese, tempura, and Japanese mayo). Whenever my family and I have visited Akashi we've always experienced quality service, great-tasting food, and friendly hospitality. The food is always fresh and delicious each and every time we go there. It seems like the same two waitresses are there working all the time, but this is wonderful because they are absolutely on point every, single time. Lastly, it's kind of funny because the interior is a throwback to the 90s light-colored wood decor and it's just a really quaint atmosphere.

Placed an order for pickup. It said that the order would be ready in 45 mins (6:27pm). Hubby went to pick it up. When he got there they said the order wasn't ready yet and it would be 5-10 mins. He waited and watched as people came in, were sat, and given their food. At 7:05 he had to again ask about our order. Lady said she would have they make it then..... He again watched people come in, be seated, order and begin eating their food. He asked again about the order. Finally after over an hour past the pickup time, he was given it. He asked to speak to a manager and was told the had no time to talk to him. He came home and I tried to call and was told everyone was too busy and that I could try and call back after 9pm or that I could come in and talk to a manager. Lady.....you just told my husband when he was there that they were too busy to talk and you want me to come back down to play these games?!? Also, my hot food was cold, my tempura had no sauce, and my sushi was all blobbed together in a mess. And she even tried to somehow blame us for the wait. Our food should have been made before you make food for people that just walked through your doors....not just once, but multiple times and orders. This is beyond unacceptable. From all perceptions they already had my $80 and therefore felt they had the power to make us wait, so that they could shove more people ahead of us and make more money. We go there ALOT and spend $80-$100 each time and that's how they treat loyal customers?? They could have called us to tell us it would be longer. They could have told my husband when he showed up that it would be an hour. And we would have accepted this and had no problem. They have called us before to tell us our food is ready early or that they were out of things and we have been fine. But to be baited with times, have our food preparation placed behind orders just placed, wait for over 2 hours and then get food that is inedible and be told basically deal with it.....no. Thats not ok. They can reach out and make this right or we will start getting our sushi from Sky Sushi from now on. It's...

So we rolled into Akashi Sushi with a party of nine, thinking we were about to have a fun night of sushi and good company. We did get sushi…eventually. Just not all at the same time.

Instead of eating together like normal humans, we played a thrilling game of “Who Gets Their Food Next?” Spoiler alert: it wasn’t the person who was starving. There was a solid 20–25 minute gap between the first dish hitting the table and the last one finally making its grand appearance. At one point, we considered just rating each plate as it arrived and going home in shifts.

Now, let’s talk salad. Calling it a “starter” is a bit generous since it was barely bigger than a condiment cup. But hey, at least it was…frozen? Yep, parts of it had a nice icy crunch. Fancy. And the dressing? Picture someone mixing orange juice and wishful thinking. Not even a hint of ginger. Unless you squint and lie to yourself.

The menu? A fun little puzzle. One of our members ordered potato croquettes thinking he was getting a tasty app. Surprise! They also showed up on his entrée plate like an uninvited guest. Who doesn’t love mystery food logistics?

And just when we started settling in…bam, check dropped on the table before we’d even finished eating. Nothing says “we value your presence” like being asked to wrap it up while mid-bite.

Bottom line: the sushi was good. The rest of the experience? Like dining in a sitcom episode with no laugh track. Would we go back? Maybe…with a stopwatch, a backup meal, and absolutely no expectations. I do not think they are suitable for a group larger...

Well…..I had planned to take my mom here on Friday for an early Mother’s Day dinner, but they told us the wait would be about 20–30 minutes. It was so packed, so I just eat by myself and bring my mom back on Saturday instead. While I was waiting, there were really bad things and ruined my whole mood. There was this family (maybe) and their table was full of food, but they started yelling at this young server, saying they didn’t get half their food. (I saw whole things they have two sushi missing,so From what I saw, it seemed like they just didn’t want to pay.just my opinion )One of the men was especially nasty, just yelling in her face And swear. It was uncomfortable and honestly disgusting to witness. And then… she ended up being my server. Poor girl looked like she was about to cry, but she still gave me amazing service — polite, kind, and even complimented my outfit. I felt awful for her. I gave her a huge tip, hoping it’d make her feel just a little better. I came back on Saturday with my mom. Totally different vibe — not busy, peaceful, and the same girl served us again. She was so sweet, had my mom laughing, and made the whole dinner feel personal and special. I honestly wasn’t planning to write a review, but then I saw that same family had posted one blaming her. Seriously? You were just plain rude. And if that poor girl had to pay for your food, I would gladly cover it for her. I even told the restaurant they should call the police I don’t know if they did, but I really hope so. It’s hard to believe people...
