El Tenampa Mexican Restaurant — Restaurant in Roanoke Rapids

So $.29 short of $50 for dinner… Takeout… That will be my last takeout and my last going there for food… Steak burrito fajita was OK 4 out of 10.. the steak quesadilla was awful. It was on a dry corn shell, and it should have been a flour tortilla no taste whatsoever… My shrimp tacos as well. We’re on a corn dry-no tasting shell as well and I have always had them on a flower show everywhere I’ve, and there was only pico to Gallo and hot sauce to put on them. No sour cream, no cheese, and usually most restaurants have a creamy sauce that put them over the top. This did not. I was really mad when the four dollar guacamole I ordered.. was what I could bought at Food Lion it was it was in a very small container not much bigger than the sauce Takeout container they give you it had absolutely no diced tomatoes no red onion no jalapeño. Driving to Florida from Massachusetts We stopped in Roanoke Rapids. Great town btw well worth the extra 15 minutes from Emporia Va. So we went to El Tenampa Mexican Restaurant which is about 1 mile from the highway in this great little town. The reviews were great and did not disappoint ! Our waitress Victorina was truly outstanding; with a warm and friendly personality and she took the time to answer all of our questions about the massive menu. Who would have thought a Mexican restaurant in north Carolina could be so great ? Victorina informed us the restaurant has been operation from before she was born and the quality of the food shows it ! Our dishes did not include Pico De Gallo and Our waitress was only too happy to bring us a side dish of it which was fabulous. I am passing through Roanoke Rapids, NC as it's the midpoint of a hellish 21-hr journey. Not feeling keen to eat yet more fast food we came here for dinner and were totally surprised as to how GOOD the food was. I usually don't even like Mexican style rice and beans whatsoever... but this place? I don't know what they put in it but it was so good I finished my plate.

I got the Chili Verde and my daughter got a combo from the vegetarian menu and also raved about her plate. Our waitress was no nonsense at first but after I told her how much we liked it, she warmed up and we had a whole beautiful and personal conversation. I usually don't leave random reviews like this, but this place deserves it.

Update: I returned here on the way back from said hellish journey just so I could eat here and ordered the same thing, and it was divine. Honestly the best TexMex...
