My family and I are extremely dissatisfied with the service we received at Burgers and Barley the evening of July 30. First, my husband asked our server (whose name I believe is Tommy according to our receipt) for the beer menu. Instead of bringing us a beer menu he said, "We have pretty much any local beer on tap," (which wasn't really helpful at all). My husband then inquired about the IPAs. The server named three IPAs they had on tap, and my husband picked Lil' Slurp. When his beer arrived, it was served in a tiny glass. My husband asked our server about this and he stammered some reason then added "I mentioned that when you ordered it," which is not true. Essentially he was blaming my husband for not hearing him. The fact is that he NEVER said that. My husband wouldn't have ordered it had he known it was served in a tiny glass. He orders that same beer several others places and it's always served in a pint glass. After we ordered our food, our server explained that oftentimes kids' meals come out before regular entrees (by about ten minutes). He asked if we wanted that. I clearly said no, that I wanted all of our meals to come at the same time. We also ordered some fried pickles as an appetizer. Our fried pickles came out about 5 minutes later and they were really good. About five minutes after that, my son's food arrived - before the adult entrees. Totally opposite of what I said. A while later, the adult entrees came out and we started eating those while also continuing to snack on our fried pickles. As I took a bite out of my burger, the server came out and took our fried pickles off the table. There were approximately 12-15 fried pickles left in the basket. Had I not had a big bite of burger in my mouth, I would've asked him to leave them. He did not ask us if we were finished with them, he just took them off the table with lots left in the basket. My husband was talking to my son at the time, so he did not see this happen. What kind of waiter takes a plate from a table when there's clearly a good bit of food left on the plate without asking? While the food was good, overall the service left a lot to be desired. Our server just wasn't good at all. He didn't communicate, didn't listen, didn't ask whether we were done with something before taking it. All in all, he made our experience a bad one. We left extremely disappointed and not...
Read moreI took my wife and 11 year old daughter for a late lunch yesterday. The hostess didn’t greet us, or provide a children’s menu. We had to ask the waitress for one. She just said, “This way”, and seated us. There was a loud, obnoxious man at a table all the way across the dining room. He was so loud, we could hardly hear each other speaking. My wife and I ordered the fried green tomato salad. My wife got chicken with hers. My daughter ordered the kids sliders. We asked what we could substitute for the fries. The waitress said, “fruit cup or Mac and cheese”. My daughter elected to get the Mac and cheese. The salads tasted good. However, they are expensive for the ingredients. The waitress never offered to refill our drinks. My water cup was empty halfway through lunch. The bill came to $54. and change. I looked it over hardly believing that could be correct. I noticed they charged us $7. for the Mac and cheese in addition to the $7. for my daughter’s sliders. We complained to the waitress because she offered it as a substitute for fries. She said that she would take care of it. When she returned, she said her manager wouldn’t remove it, because we ate it. Well of course we ate it!! What a stupid thing to say, as if we hadn’t eaten it, would they have served it to someone else? I told her to get the manager. The manager arrived, and I polity explained that the Mac and cheese was offered as a substitute for fries. She took care of it, and removed the $7. charge for it. We also noticed that my daughter was charged $3. for a lemonade/tea, but my wife only $2.75 for a Diet Coke. I’m not sure why there would be a difference. Many restaurants charge less for tea than soda. Anyway, the bill was still $47. + tip. We won’t be returning, because the meal provided was overpriced for some salad greens and a piece of chicken. The hostess never thanked us for our business or even acknowledged us as we left. The customer service was lacking a lot, especially since the lunch...

So Saturday of cleaning the house and walking or resident quadruped, we finally decided to show up. We were quite a wait of 20 minutes, and with the kids in tow that's usually a hard sell. The weather was nice, and every other standby we love would be packed, so we stuck it out.
10 minutes later the hostess had the nerve, nay, the AUDACITY to seat us well before the quoted time. She also had the nerve... No the acumen, to tell us that the kitchen was heavily backed up and that food may take over half an hour to arrive. Not the best news, but it's not information to which I'm used to being privy. Well, I was fine with that, too.
We ordered the kids' food first and an app. As we waited I noticed the growing crowd of hungry patrons awaiting a table. This was encouraging. For me. Not so much for those waiting.
Everything showed up around the expected time. And it was worth the wait. Easily the best burger I've had within 600 miles of Charlotte. It tasted like hamburger, was cooked a perfect medium rare, and neither crumbled to pieces not required extended chewing. Excellence. The home cut fries were fresh and I liked the spices they added.
We also got a dessert to go, which I have...
