Want to share a very negative and disrespectful experience that myself and others who accompanied me and my party, on one summer night down in the district.
First a bit background of us, I myself was at the time 35 years old IT technician business owner and served nearly 15 years as a correctional officer, Uncle around 40+ years old, well respected retired military vetran, his son about 22yrs old aspiring producer at the time visiting from germany and uncle friend who also is a veteran.
To the point! We hardly ever visit the district as it seems to be more of young people type of place, but my uncle son wanted to visit the area, long story short uncle friend was denied entry into RibCO doorman stated " his jeans was gang affiliated type of attire Chicagoans wear" which as a Chicago native I knew this to be grossly untrue, uncle friend replies in shock these are designer jeans that cost nearly $200 a pair, ( FYI the jeans were damn ugly in my opinion), most of us was wearing dress slacks and or casual wear, my uncle son was confused! as we all were to be honest, and just engaged in a respectful conversation with the doorman who kindly obliged him, Brian (uncle son) questioned the attire that some of other white patrons, that were not denied entry, but attire was similar if not worse as far as Ugly jeans go :) it seemed he was profiling because we were African American.
Skipping ahead! out comes 45yr old White guy yelling at Brian, which we can hear, at the time, me and my uncle was already maybe a block away casually talking, along with his friend, the owner just cursing like a sailor, and begans to call upon a nearby cop and states " I want all them Mother F.ckers arrested " the cop not hearing are side of story immediately takes all are ID's we presented them and questioned why! We're not even near or thinking about that place, officer calls his seargent over and another officer and began to write trespassing citations, which we were astonished, and at the same time the owner his yelling over the Officer back profanity and threatening us, which as a member of law enforcement I was shock and thinking! who is the authority figure here, and based on his threats alone he should have been at minimum told to step back as he could and was escalating the matter, yet the officers was doing his bidding like a pet dog fetching a bone sickening, he had to be drunk but that doesn't excuse blatant racism, and yes I do mean racism referring to us as animals and other things I can't even write in this review.
I would like to add this was nearly 4 years ago and until this day me and my uncle remains upset about the matter and went as far as calling the police station the next morning, only to be told nothing we could do and the citation is just that a citation, Rock Island police is quite obviously bought out by these folks, I stay away from the district, that place and Rock island police as I witnessed first hand the biases, and they have had artist that I would have definitely went to see, I love the Quad cities, have traveled the U.S and veterans traveled the world and all agree the people here tend to see you based off your character and action not your skin color, and this owner of RibCO ruined that for us and I consider him anything but a true Quad Citian.
I write this review to give a formal public documentation, of the obvious racism and biases that I'm quite certain goes un reported, but I and others have had the unfortunate experience to be subjected to, and encourage others to do the same as justice will not prevail through local law...
Read moreRock island Brewinc Co (RIBCO) is a great bar and music venue.
First, their beer selection is top-notch. Over 100 different bottles, including domestic, craft, and microbreweries. The same goes for what's on draught - a spectacuar mix of fantastic finds. They also feature breweries, including release nights for specific breweries, showing off the best of what they have to offer. Unsure what you want, or what you would like? Ask one of the bartenders, who are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. These days I just ask them for somehting dark and interesting, and they never disappoint. Drink specials Mon-Wed.
The food is good - nothing to write home about, but nothing bad by any means. Burger baskets on Monday and Tuesday, as well as unlimited wings Wednesday make good specials.
As a music venue, they are second-to-none in the QC. They consistently bring in great acts in a more intimate venue than you would expect. The Melvins, OK GO, Neon Trees, Chevelle, Reverend Horton Heat, Here Come The Mummies (my personal favorite) - an eclectic variety, all in an accessible venue. Outdoor concerts in the summer are even better. Live music Thur-Sat and karaoke Wed (where you will typically see some of the best musicians and actors in the QC, as well as the visiting artist at Circa '21).
If you're looking for a great place to enjoy fantastic beer and entertainment from around the country, RIBCO is your...
Read moreOverpriced and mediocre. While the staff are courteous, the owner is aggressive, rude, and cruising for a lawsuit.
Owner Terry Titka told me I couldn't come in with my service dog unless she had a vest (she had s clearly marked leash and collar and neither vest nor documentation is required by the Americans with Disabilities Act).
He called the police on me after I entered the restaurant anyway. When the police came, they took me outside but finally looked up the ADA rules. The officers apologized to me and told the owner he couldn't throw me out for having a service dog without a vest.
But the owner was still extremely aggressive, talking over me, telling me the whole incident was my fault, and that I was extremely rude (I was being super careful to be polite because he was so aggressive and I knew I was in the right. And I was picturing how the ADA lawsuit might turn out.)
I ate there despite my misgivings because I felt vindicated, and I wanted to support the waitstaff who were cool to me and looked frightened of the owner.
The food was expensive for pretty mediocre fair. I...
