Nunzio's Restaurant — Restaurant in Rockford Township

Went there with family, and I really enjoyed the experience overall--as did everyone else in our party.

Entrees the other adults had included the NY strip, the salmon, and the mostaccioli.

I had the cheese ravioli with meat sauce (gravy). The cook on the ravioli was on point, and the ricotta filling was simple and delicious.

Before getting into the details, overall pros: Generally delicious food and attentive, friendly service. (Special note about the service: we had a couple of HIGHLY picky children in our group, and our server and the kitchen came through on every point.)

Overall cons: atmosphere is lacking (the dining area consists of a couple of almost-windowless rooms separated by an 80s-style room divider), and the salads are way too Midwestern*.

Let's talk about sauce. I don't have a dog in the fight of savory-only vs. sweet, because I enjoy good sauces across the spectrum. But for what it's worth, the sauce here is of the sweeter variety. I loved it (as did everyone else); the sweetness was well balanced, the aroma itself was gorgeously enticing, and the color was this beautiful, deep red that makes your mouth water. My only disappointment with the sauce was that it was simply poured over the pastas; no pan-tossing (super evident on the mostaccioli).

Also, FWIW, the meat sauce is the kind where it's light on the meat, but that's fine with me. (I should note that I didn't try the meatless sauce, but it seemed to have the same base.)

BLBTEN (Bottom Line Before The End Notes): DEFINITELY go here for tasty, homestyle Italian fare (and NY strip and salmon). This isn't the place for elegance, but your taste buds will be generally pleased.

*Let's talk salads, Midwesterner to Midwesterner. I love the best things about the region, but this is an important point. I grew up in a small town in Illinois, and I'm proud to now live in Wisconsin, where the salad bar happens to have been invented (for better and for worse). So I'm no stranger to the house salad that consists of unevenly chopped lettuce and dry, shaved carrots.

But while the Italian dressing I had was perfectly flavorful with a nice bit of zing, the vegetables were wiltingly flaccid. I'm sending out a call:
