We have been going to That's Amore practically since it opened, and our experience this past weekend was so unbelievably bad that I will never be back, and will make sure everyone I know is aware that they shouldn't go either.
We arrived and received our menus, and then didn't see a waiter again for probably twenty minutes. We had to go find the waiter to see if anyone was planning to take our order. Which, whatever, service was a bit absent but not the end of the world. We were able to order, and our food arrived in a timely manner. The food was okay, it's decent Italian food and they offer family style servings, which was nice for our party. Whenever someone did come by our table, the service was very bizarre. At least twice, someone tried to take my plate away when there was still food on it and I had my fork in my hand, obviously still eating. It took forever to get anything we asked for, and yet somehow we still felt rushed.
We asked for the check and the server disappeared for at least half an hour. When the checks finally arrived, they were full of mistakes. I was charged for someone else's dessert, and another person had my appetizer on their bill, etc. At this point we felt like if we sent the checks to be redone we might just never see the server again, so we just handled it amongst ourselves.
What made this experience unacceptable was that, at the end of the meal, we had all received our receipts, except one group of three who had shared a family style meal. They put a credit card and cash in with their bill, but they did not receive receipts or the card back. When the owner of the credit card brought this to our server's attention, he immediately became extremely defensive and began yelling at her, cursing and berating her and saying that she had the card. We pointed out that the entire check was gone and had never been returned, and asked for a copy of the receipt to prove that the card had been run. The server could not provide any evidence that he ever took the money to the till. He was so aggressive and rude to our party that we asked for the manager, the table next to us asked for the manager to complain about how we were treated, and another table also approached to defend us. The manager was polite, but did not track down the missing check and just took our friend's name and number.
If the staff at That's Amore do not find and return my friend's card to her within the next couple of days, I will suggest that she file a police report for theft. An entire check with a credit card and a large amount of cash does not just mysteriously not make it to the till without either extreme incompetence or actual criminal behavior. I was not satisfied that the manager understood how serious a matter this is. It is well beyond the scope of just an unsatisfied customer. The way we were treated was inexcusable and should never...

On Saturday evening, January 27th, my lady friend and I invited some friends to join us in the bar area to share in her birthday celebration (of a couple days earlier). The bar area had some live music we enjoy so we had some friends join us. My lady friend is a pastry chef of some repute so we brought in a cake. We do this on occasion at venues in the Gaithersburg area and have never had trouble. That being said, we do understand some venues don’t allow you to bring in food. However, when we arrived before 7 pm the bar manager did not tell us we could not have the cake there. She did not seem bothered at all. In fact, through the course of the night we shared a handful of (large) cookies with their staff. At the outset, she asked if I would be paying for everyone’s drinks. I told her that we would only be paying for our own. Each individual would pay for their own drinks, as well. As the evening was progressing, a number of friends showed up. Some arrived around 9 pm. Throughout, at least a half dozen friends had created their own checks. The late arrivals didn’t even have a chance to order before the fireworks went off. One had an appetizer and soft drink. Others had beer and wine. We had a $20 tab ourselves. We were planning on getting another drink or two.
Suddenly, at about 9:10, just after we sang Happy Birthday, the server comes up to us and says the owner wants to charge $2.50 per person (or $37.50) because we said we expected 15 people. I guess he didn’t think we were spending enough money, although other people in our party were paying their own way. I asked why the server didn’t tell us this from the beginning. I knew why. The venue had hired the band and they were losing money. I’m not sure what they pay ($700-$800), but the bar was not at all crowded, many fewer people than I’ve seen before. (I dine there or go to the bar area monthly, on average). The owner figured he’d try and recoup some of his lost money at our expense. I told him I wasn’t paying the fee because he was trying to take advantage of us. He threatened to call the police. I told him to go ahead. We were leaving, anyway. He called me cheap. I also added that I was a regular customer there, but not anymore. Not only was he not getting the additional $37.50, but he just lost a customer who frequented his restaurant regularly. There are plenty of very good Italian restaurants in the area, better than that one.
Finally, I noticed other reviewers mentioning how rude and discourteous the...
