It pains me to rate so low, but honesty is the best policy. Understand that I rate from a Jamaican perspective. That being said, here goes. I happened to visit on one of the hottest days this summer 🌞. All week it's between 95-100 degrees. When I arrived I was the only person waiting to go up, but after 15 minutes I was still waiting and the lines were through the door out into the scorching sun and suffering heat.
The servers are super SLOW. There is no shade sufficient outside to protect customers from heatstroke. Mind you this place has been around for a while, but yet it is still tiny serving area, and minimal coverage outdoors. Please consider some internal and external improvements.
Additionally, the 2 guys were slow. 1 super SLOW. And they were both cashier and server. And when groups of 4 or more goes up, trying flavours and being in decisive about orders, you will be in for a long wait. Please have a cashier separate or someone who can be the cashier and get people moving through quickly.
It took me less than 5 minutes to make and receive my order. But the group ahead of me was still there after 20 minutes. And I was there about 30 minutes on a super HOT 🥵 🔥 day.
I was also a little let down that for a Jamaican establishment there were no Jamaicans working there. This seems to be a trend, as Negril's Restaurant in Mitchelville front of shop has none either. So, some of that authenticity is missing.
The ice cream also lacked more than a few nuts. I ordered GRAPE NUT ice cream. It seems ingredients were cut to save on costs? Please put them back. That's one of the things that makes Yorks ice cream a nostalgic experience for me. Because I remember this from the 80s and 90s when the product was more authentic.
I will say this!!! The one scoop is still huge as it is back home. It's like getting three scoops, which makes it a great draw 😉 😀.
Finally, Jamaicans love our ice cream, 🍨🍦 but I do believe, we don't necessarily want to die or have heat stroke for it. Management please invest in some improvements. Coverings or a better setup inside to allow for a more customer...
Read moreFirst I would like to say thank you to the person who started this company. I have had other brands of grapenut ice cream. This one is by far my FAVORITE. All natural ingredients come together to create a creamy and delicious flavored sweet treat. My 1st experience with caribbean flavored ice cream was as a teenager. My family visited my father's home country of Trinidad and Tobago. He purchased grapenut flavored ice cream that was homemade at a popular market. Well I was hooked. When we got back to the states (we lived in NJ)he showed me where we could get some. I didn't know a company in Maryland made caribbean ice cream until 06-22-2020. I had gone into The Golden Crust to get a chicken and vegetable patties. As I turned to leave I saw the ice cream freezer. I peeped inside and saw my favorite flavored caribbean ice cream. I purchased a pint which came to $6.00 and some change. It was totally worth the money. If your in the mood for a delightful creamy sweet treat that's a little different get you some York Castle Ice Cream. You won't be...
Read moreThe tropical l, unique and traditional ice cream flavors were amazing. It was so hot out I forgot to photograph my order and that of my companion. We ordered a half and half cone with chocolate and mango, and an ice cream float.
The ice cream at York Castle is a wonderful balance of flavor and creaminess that is not overwhelmingly syrupy sweet. The sweet to creamy texture ratio was in balance that made the ice cream that much more decadent.
The float was graciously served with a generous amount of ice cream, akin to what you'd get in the Midwest, and the soda on the side so that you can mix it up how you'd like, the normal mix option was available but it was so hot this was the most logical.
Staff was helpful and patient with my indecisive self, but come on it's ice cream, picking only a couple flavors is difficult.
Only suggestions would be a menu that a bit closer to read, I forgot my glasses and it was hard to see. Totally worth the journey for the joy...
