McDonald's — Restaurant in Rocky Mount

Let me start off by saying, I hate leaving bad reviews, especially for local companies. The McDonald's in Rocky Mount has always been a great McDonald's with great employees, great service, and great food. It stood alone from any other McDonald's in the area. It's a local McDonald's that you could feel confident in telling your friends and family to visit because it was a great place. The McCarty family had a great restaurant here for many years. It's been a tradition of ours to go every Friday afternoon for the past decade+.

Fast forward to July 2025. I always order our food on the app, and use curbside service. This has always been the fastest option, and orders were never messed up. I could park, get my food and leave before the car paying, ever even got their food. Over the past month or so, this service has gotten incredibly slow. It's still been faster than the drive-thru but noticeably slower.

Last weekend I placed my order but when checking out on the app, none of the drinks were available. Most of the sodas were unavailable, as was tea both sweet and unsweet. I figured this was an issue with the app at the time, so I decided to just go through the drive thru. The drive thru was so slow, and once I finally got to order the food, they informed me they were indeed out of all drinks, including tea. I can understand a soda machine being broken or out of carbonation or whatever but tea also? How is McDonald's out of TEA? That was ridiculous. Come to find out, they were also out of several sizes of cups, and also could not clean up a spill inside because they were "out of mop buckets". How does anywhere not have a mop bucket?

Perplexed, I took to social media only to find out that the McCarty family no longer owns and runs this McDonald's. You can tell a major difference. The great McDonald's that the McCarty family owned and ran is no more. This is just a normal run-of-the-mill McDonald's with poor service. It's sad because once what was a great fast food establishment in Rocky Mount that a family worked so hard to build and earn its great reputation has been destroyed in less than a few months by new ownership. This McDonalds location has overpriced food. The Crispy chicken sandwich is overpriced. At 3.89 and by the time you add the Va sales tax and both the local government sales tax and the local government prepared meal tax and this brings the total cost to over 4.00. I tried one and this is not worth the price. You do not need a pickle on a chicken sandwich. ON MAY 6, 2021 I ordered two Mc Chicken sandwiches and not only the price had risen to 1.29 each from 1.00 and the chicken had no taste to it at all. The only thing my wife Marjorie and I could taste was the mayonnaise and lettuce. We used to eat there every day from the time we moved here to Rocky Mount Va on December 16th of 2016. We do not eat here every day no more. The food quality has gone down on the McChicken sandwiches and the McChicken biscuits. Only the Mc Doubles and Daily double hamburgers are alright. The owner operator in my personal belief now wants quantity over quality. Mostly she hires only high school students who sometimes do not have a good work ethic. There are only about a dozen persons who are older and do care about the customers. This location and the McDonalds who are in Democratic governed states are closed to dine in. There have closed their dining rooms since April of 2020. There is no word when this location will open their dining room again. I am looking at next year if even then. If my wife and myself want to go to a McDonald's and eat in and then we would have to travel to West Virginia or Tennessee to do this. There is a Appplebee's restaurant one mile east of this location in Rocky Mount Va that is open to dine in. Of course Applebee's is expensive. A better alternative would be Bojangles and Redwood Express Mart and Deli which are both nearby. I do not reccomend this McDonald's location for anyone until their food quality is better and their dining room is open again. This is from my wife Marjorie and I personal experience and beliefs. We have been customers of this McDonald's since September of 2016. Over the past seven years we have noticed that the food quality has gone downhill. The sausage and burger patties are too greasy and the Mc Muffins are too hard around the edges. The biscuits are either too hard or too soft to eat and come apart when you eat them. The owner and corporate McDonald's will not give discounts to veterans and their families. My belief is that they believe that veterans and their families are not important. Now in the last week and this McDonald's location charges $1.29 for each cup of medium and large water. They have also closed off the water dispensary at the self-serve soft drink station in the lobby. You have to go to the front counter for water and you will have to wait for a staff member to get it from behind the counter. After the remodeling of this location in January of 2019, and the front registers were cut down from three to two and only one register of the two that are left are staffed. Some of the time a staff person will not be at this register. From what I was told in the past two weeks, some high school students abused the water station. From now on each and every customer will have to pay for medium and large cups of water for some high school student's misconduct. (There is a large high school nearby). The small water cups are free. My wife and I will bring our bottled water in with us in a future visit. Each customer still has to pay three taxes for each medium and large water cup purchased.
