I wanted Chinese the other night and went to three different grocery stores (I'm embarrassed to say that I forgot about checking Google Reviews but to my defense, I was exhausted!). It was getting late and none of the grocery stores had food out anymore. That's when I did remember to check Google Reviews and I am SO glad I did. I would've never tried China Star otherwise.
It's just in a little strip mall in Roeland Park; I've driven by it a million times and never given it much thought. And to be honest, I am a little leery of trying strip mall Chinese places....just sayin'. But I was craving Chinese and nothing else was going to fit the bill. The place is very clean and bright. I probably wouldn't eat in just because there's not much room and two of the tables were taken up by the owner's children....coloring books, TV; etc. But I thought to myself how sweet it was that the entire family was there together. The teenage girl, who had her nose in a book, jumped up every time someone came in the door to take their orders. Darling.
The food was good, hot, freshly made, and CHEAP. I didn't pay much mind to what I was spending because I was so hungry and I just kept thinking of things to add to my order....."I'll have egg drop soup, and a quart of sesame chicken, and chicken lo mein...." You get the picture. Anyway, I was expecting her to say something like $20 to $30. I could not believe it when she said $15!
I took it as carry out and my family loved it too. We won't be going anywhere else for Chinese take out from now on. (I'm also thrilled that they didn't have a buffet. Chinese buffets are...
Read moreIf I could, I'd give this place 10/5 stars. I'm not really a fan of Chinese food, but my mom loves it so we get it often and from many different places. China Star was a bit out of our way, but based on the reviews we stopped by. BEST CHINESE I'VE EVER HAD, HANDS DOWN. Nothing was greasy, the rice was perfect, the fried rice was flavorful and had little pieces of pork in it that kicked it way up.
I got the shrimp in lobster sauce, because to me the true test of good Chinese is how they make their seafood dishes. It was so good I wanted to lick my plate clean! And it didn't smell overly fishy. The white rice was fluffy and cooked to perfection. The hot and sour soup was nice, rich and spicy. My mom had the lo mien and she enjoyed it. The noodles were flat which was a nice change from the cheap round almost orange ones from most places. Her egg roll was perfect. My son had the sesame chicken and it was perfect, no huge chunks and the meat wasn't fried into oblivion. I was excited to see the egg drop soup wasn't neon yellow like most places. It had a huge amount of egg and the flavor was delicate and salty. We also got broccoli with chicken, a nice basic dish with the perfect amount of sauce and perfectly cooked broccoli.
I will be back here every time I crave...
