I haven't been to too many places to eat in the last several months. Virtually every mean has been something I've cooked, but you know, even when you're doing a recipe that's so familiar, you know you have this down pat, how to make it just the way you like it, it always comes out great, but then this phenomena happens where you've utterly lost your appetite by the time it's finished. IN OTHER WORDS, once in a while, regardless of whether it's the responsible thing to do, you just really wanna eat something someone else has prepared. And I like to think, in the last couple of times I've done this, I'm being choosy enough to make it count. Well.... There used to be a place in Ruston that had a very good Cuban sandwich. Since I had to be there today that was my plan. Unfortunately that place, including the entire building it used to be in, has gone away. So I checked to see what inexpensive place might be around now that I could indulge. And this place seems crazy popular. It IS a bright, colorful place. It's that new layout where you order at a counter and sit in a big bright dining room type place. Lots of red a white tile, pretty tasteful for a dinerish type place. And the menu is pretty mixed, with not just burgers but fish, shrimp, chicken, both fried and grilled, in platters, salads, poboys, so I was hopeful, but decided to go for the main items, burger and fries. Yeah, it's been a while. Now, at this point, what can I say... I really don't like doing negative reviews, and I didn't try the fish, chicken, or shrimp, but then the name of the place is Flying Burger so this SHOULD be a signature item, right? Yeah... First off my fault I asked for the combo with cheese and grilled onions, and neglected to explicitly state I also wanted mayo, lettuce, tomato, easy on the pickle.. so I got a dry bun with patty, cheese, and onions. Fair enough, at least this would be an unadulterated test of the burger, and I would be fair about the lack of condiments. But, what this clearly showed me was an overcooked, crumbly patty lacking tenderness and juice. It was reasonably generous, a tad larger than a Whataburger, I'd measure, but just really blah. Smashburger is much better, Whataburger is honestly about as good, and did I mention this combo, with onions and cheese, was right at $14? With a SMALL drink? (I got it to go, almost half the clientele just wandered in without a mask on. I wasn't staying.) Bad enough, but then the fries also disappointed. They LOOK great, like they're perfectly cooked, but mine were just plain mushy. I didn't wait 20 minutes to try them either, I tried them right away. The seasoning was reasonably good, although I think other places do that better for less as well. But I'd have forgiven that if the things weren't just... mushy. Not soggy with oil, just mushy. So... two stars for decor, mainly. And perhaps everything else they make is much better. And it was the lunch rush so maybe care wasn't being taken in the kitchen like it should. Heck, I don't know. But for the price, pretty poor...
Read moreWe are from south texas and visited Ruston for a football camp. My son wanted a burger after camp so we stopped on our way back to the hotel.
I was not expecting a seafood and red meat counter when you walk in. It looked like a little fast food joint from outside. My son ordered a cheeseburger all the way and since he is a kid the kind gentleman taking our order still asked him if he wanted each option. My son declined the tomatoes and onions. What a smart guy to ask the kid even after he said all the way. I ordered fried shrimp and crawfish tail basket.
While waiting for our food a very nice lady came and asked how we were and explained the quality of food they have at flying burger. I assume she was the owner, very sweet lady.
The food came out quickly and was absolutely delicious. Their homemade tartar sauce was INCREDIBLE!!! Im not a big tartar sauce fan as I'd rather have cocktail but this stuff was great. We finished it off with two cookies and cream filled waffle cones that hit the spot. I almost forgot the handcuf fries. We both barely had any because we wanted ice cream. We left enough for a meal in itself on the table as the servings were huge!!!
We went back for the EXACT meal on day 2. If we are ever back in town or passing through we will...
Read moreMe and my husband stopped in for a burger. The cashier was not friendly at all. We told her the single burger combo- husband double meat combo and she asked how we wanted it. I said we wanted it all the way. She proceeded to ask what kind of cheese. We said American. The total was $32 and some change. I asked how is that if combos are 11.99 and 13.99. She said cheese is extra. I looked at menu $1.59 for a piece of cheese. My goodness!!! I told her no please take it off. It still was so expensive even after that!! And I found out later we could have gotten a senior discount! It’s like the young girl with purple hair on her ponytail just didn’t care! She had to have known after the cheese incident we were trying to save a little on the really high price of this basic fried thin piece of meat hamburger! Why wouldn’t she have offered us a senior discount? I’ll tell you why because she truly didn’t care! We almost walked out before she ordered because of the way she didn’t greet us friendly like Flying Burger should have trained her to do!! I just had to give everyone a heads up about this place!! It was way too overpriced for a senior watching their money!!! I posted the prices and took a picture of an updated menu! We seniors need to watch each...
