The food was excellent. Our waitress was excellent and just amazing. The owner of the restaurant, however, was incredibly rude and surly. The website says their hours are until 2:00 pm to serve breakfast. We showed up around 1:40 pm. We sat down and from the beginning, it was apparent things were in a bit of a rush, but the servers were extremely polite and friendly. I was there with my 80 year old mother. She tends to eat slowly. About 2:15, the owner came over and barked at our table, "Are you paying in cash or credit?" She had a nasty look on her face, and actually practically stuck her face in my brother's face when she said it. One of us said credit and went up and paid. The owner continued to look over, make faces, and finally she said something like this is unbelievable or this is ridiculous in an exasperated tone while she scowled at us. I talked to the waitress about the attitude, she apologized, and informed me that it was the owner who was doing this because she wanted her customers out of her restaurant at 2:30.
I went over to the owner and told her we were paying customers and to stop with the attitude. Oh boy, did she go off. She acted like it was my problem. She said she wanted everyone out of HER restaurant by 2:30 because they all want to go home. When she said this, it was 2:28 pm. Again, the hours were until 2:00, which I pointed out. Obviously people would be left in the restaurant after 2:00. She said they stopped serving at 1:45, which again wouldn't make a difference. People can easily linger over breakfast for 45 minutes to an hour. So I pointed out to her that she served us past 1:45, and how were we supposed to know there was some hard stop where we were supposed to be gone by 2:30 (again, this was all happening BEFORE 2:30). She lost it at that point and told me just to get out. How nice to say something like this to a paying customer after she was inexcusably rude. It should be pointed out that NOWHERE on her website, menu, or on any sign in the restaurant was this "rule" of hers posted, so how were we supposed to know this? Simply unbelievable.
It deteriorated from there, with her telling me that I started it by pointing out her rudeness, as if the rudeness wasn't what started it. She kept telling me to just get out. I said I bet you're from New York. She said yes and proud of it and if I was in New York, "they" would have thrown me out of the restaurant. I told her she was NOT in New York, and this is not how Vermonters treat people. I then told her I hope she enjoyed her miserable life.
I'm still stunned that a business owner would be this nasty to a customer. It was incredibly unprofessional and mean-spirited. When we left, we actually felt sad for her, because we could only guess that her circumstances must be so bad that she felt she had license to act the way she did. The servers sheepishly apologized, to which I told them it was not their fault at all; rather, it was the owner's.
We'll never go back. Too bad, because the food and service were excellent. But I will simply never give business to an owner who is so wholly unapologetic about her rudeness, and has the temerity to try to put it back on her customers. She knows what she did. But she'd never admit it. Apparently it never occurred to her to approach our table, politely tell us that in her restaurant she preferred to have her customers leave by 2:30 (although that's ridiculous if you are open until 2:00 pm), and could we please wrap it up. You get back what you put out. Someday I hope she learns her lesson and is treated equally poorly. Perhaps she'll think back on this incident, although I...
Read moreBest Breakfast in Rutland! This place was recommended to us, so we checked the reviews and the reviews looked good. I will say that the positive reviews are accurate. We ended up going here twice over the Presidents day holiday weekend. They serve Bloody Marys and Mimosas on weekends. We knew this was going to be an interesting and unique breakfast experience. On Saturday morning our group of seven had a very nice and filling breakfast experience. You get a big plate loaded up with good for a decent price. There was plenty of room, and the seats were fairly comfortable to sit in. Johnny Boy's did not disappoint. Well worth the trip. Enjoyed the biscuits and gravy which are only available on weekends. On Monday morning (holiday & getaway day for all the Killington tourists) we were going to try out another local breakfast place, but the wait over there was over 90 minutes. It was a no-brainer, "Let's go back to Johnny Boy's." This time they were glad to accommodate our group of ten. We offered to let them split up the group but they told us they would keep our whole group together. We only waited a few minutes. Once again the service was attentive and friendly. There was a bit of a wait, maybe about 20 minutes, for the food to come out of the kitchen. The restaurant staff was very attentive and kept our coffee cups and orange juice glasses full while we waited. Overall, both days, a fantastic...
Read moreI've heard many good things about this establishment, but they didn't carry through to my visit today. My friends and I were quickly seated (6 of us) but waited 30 minutes for the waitress to take our order. She came over and right off the bat was extremely rude to us. We had a question about one of the dishes and all she did was snap at us we asked about possibly splitting checks she said no we are to busy for that. she was very short the whole time. When we finally got our food she didn't even ask if we needed anything else. She never came back over to check on us and after 25 minutes she gave us the bill. No boxes nothing. Our total had come to 91.87 but the problem was the waitress added her own tip. When we asked the girl at the front what it was she was like oh I don't know what that is we never do that. She didn't offer to change it or anything. So we paid some in cash then split the rest on 2 cards. The girl at the front had no idea what she was doing which made it even better. My friend paid 27 then was asked if she wanted to leave another tip TWICE. even though it was included in the 91. The remaining balance was 24, so I handed my card to her she cashed me out and luckily I took my receipt. Because when I got outside I looked at it she had charged me a dollar extra. I rate this experience a 1/10 and the food...
