I do enjoy a good bowl of ramen every now and then, especially the milky creamy tonkotsu varietal. The location of this new ramen establishment is within walking distance from my home. The last time I had this luxury was when I was living in SOMA in SF. Even then, the ramen was $12+ a bowl and not always great. Each bowl here clocks in right under $10 before tax. Ever since Mensho opened up on Geary street in SF, I’ve kind of been using that as the bar to beat, unfortunately Tenjin isn’t close to being Mensho, and that’s ok, because I don’t feel like waiting in line for an hour anyway. In Sacramento, I like Ryujin the most. Tenjin is very similar to Ryujin. So if you like Ryujin; you will most likely enjoy this place. The black garlic tonkotsu ramen is nearly identical as Ryujin. Same thing with the gyoza and takoyaki. Not the most amazing but solid — the skin is perfect on the gyoza but like Ryujin, their gyoza lacked flavor. Takoyaki was unfortunately deep fried and a bit soggy. I did however, thought the spicy tonkotsu ramen was just ok, as I tasted more of the sriracha than the creamy broth. As always, there’s always room for improvement and I hope to see this nice little neighborhood ramen place flourish. I will definitely come back should I have a sudden hankering for some creamy black garlic tonkotsu for a quick fix, definitely a very nice addition to the...
Read moreAs I live in the area and noticed the giant "Now Open" sign, I couldn't resist stopping by to patron a new local business and try the menu. Ordered an appetizer of the Gyoza, and their basic ramen. As far as the taste and quality of the food is concerned, I had no issues. (Note: The food could have been served slightly hotter. It wasn't all that hot, and I'm certainly not a picky eater).
As far as the staff, service, and atmosphere are concerned - there is some room for improvement. However I do understand they are new and still figuring everything out. The tables were all squished together in the corner of the restaurant, with plenty of open space in the middle of restaurant. The service was short, and thus took awhile to have our orders taken. They also never asked if we wanted a drink, just assumed we wanted water. I will note that the service was friendly, though.
My only last tip of advice, if they read this review - would be to have new menus designed. As a patron who knows nothing about ramen, and all the different kinds - a menu with more photos would be extremely helpful to understand the different ramen types available. Just my two cents.
I'll eat there again forsure - but will probably do...
Read moreThis place has almost got it for ramen in Sacramento.
I ordered their Tan-Tan-Men and not only did I find it to be properly spicy because of the hot chili oil, but the ground pork to be surprisingly authentic to what I've had in Japan!
It also comes with some greens which actually absorb the flavor of the broth really well and the green onions and garlic give the broth much more depth in flavor.
I found myself wanting to drink all the broth even though I knew I would regret it later in the day!
The only reason it loses 1 star is because the noodles didn't feel fresh. I don't know if they make their noodles or buy them but improving on that would make this an absolutely solid place to go.
Service wise there was a really kind aunty and I appreciated that!
I think the atmosphere could also use a little work as during the day time at around 11AM it was pitch black in the restaurant and there were plenty of to go boxes just sitting in plain view.
There's a nice darker dinner aesthetic going for it, but I think there needs to be a brighter mood during the day maybe?
I'm definitely coming back to try their different ramens!
I will post...
