Took my mother here for her birthday, she was adamant that she wanted lasagna before we arrived and luckily they happened to be doing a seasonal special lasagna, otherwise this place is primarily focused on pizza & most of the menu has a spanish influence I'd say
we got their green salad to start and split it, it was 16$ and honestly was not great but not horrible, the croutons were rock hard and impossible to pierce with a fork, and overall it was far too sweet to be a salad in my and my mothers opinion. I did see the caesar salad and if I had gone alone I would have chosen that, a neighboring table ordered it and it looked amazing with cheese piled high on top. overall I'd rate the green salad a 6/10 it easily could have been an 8/10 if it had some sort of red vinaigrette, just don't think sweet pears mix well with arugula.
For entrees my mother got a lasagna with a beef Bolognese sauce, it was a decently sized portion for 21$ I believe it was 17 without the bolognese addition but it seemed worth it she was pleased with it but said it could have used a bit more cheese and was rather light, I didn't try any I wasn't displeased with the price at all for the portion size.
I bought a full pizza of Italian sausage, it was a bit expensive at 28$ And a singular slice was 7.50$ I believe a slice is about 1/4th - 1/5th of the whole pizza so you can just get individual slices if you just want to try something, I'm a thin guy at 6'2 ~150lbs so there was a bit of miscommunication where they thought I just wanted a slice initially but they quickly corrected the mistake and gave me an entire pizza after giving me the original individual slice, and they didn't bill me for the individual slice since it was a simple miscommunication, great customer service in that respect. I wish the pizza had a bit more sauce and the tomatoes were distributed a bit more evenly, overall the taste was good id give it an 8.5/10 they recommended the carnitas when I said I was torn between the two, and perhaps I should have agreed to it when the waiter said it was his favorite, but I was not disappointed with the sausage pizza. I will say the pizza is probably very liquidy / greasy as they let you cut it yourself and it may not keep well in the fridge or as leftovers due to that, well charred but a lot of flop.
For desert we split a tiramisu, I had my hopes very high for this as we love tiramisu but this just didn't pull enough weight. it was 14$ for a slice, though the slice was fairly large enough so for two people to comfortably split it and not want more, it was rather bitter and lacked sweetness, my mother's opinion was the chocolate was too bitter and I thought it was the alcohol that was supposedly in it but either way we both agreed the tiramisu was just not sweet enough for a cake, I've had many that are far better and this was the highest expectation to failure out of the dishes we ordered, I'd give it a 6/10 we cleared our plate of it but it just wasn't good and had no wow factor.
Overall I think we just chose poorly with the salad and bought into the hype around the tiramisu, a neighboring table ordered the bread and butter as an app, and said it was amazing. overall I'd give this place a 7/10 maybe a 7.5/10, the service was great but the food just missed the mark with the salad being too sweet and desert being too bitter. if those options were elevated to 8-9 range I'd gladly come back as it seems like a respectable place with nice workers and a good atmosphere but just too expensive for the price. I will say all of the food seemed fresh / homemade and I don't feel like I will have any regrets after eating there. It all seemed rather healthy and I approve of the homemade vibe...
Read moreI had the pleasure of dining at Solimar in Oak Park, and I can confidently say it was a culinary experience to remember. From start to finish, everything about this restaurant radiated excellence.
I began with the "Bread and Butter," a deceptively simple dish that showcased the magic of expertly crafted flavors. The bread was perfectly warm and crusty, while the butter—rich, creamy, and elevated with thoughtful seasoning—was the kind you could eat by the spoonful.
Then came the star of the evening: the "Beef Bolognese Lasagna." This dish was nothing short of perfection. Layers of tender, melt-in-your-mouth pasta, robust and flavorful beef bolognese, and a perfectly balanced béchamel sauce came together in a symphony of comfort and sophistication. Every bite was better than the last, with a depth of flavor that had me savoring each moment.
The ambiance of Solimar added to the experience—elegant yet welcoming, with attentive service that made me feel cared for without being overbearing.
If you're in Oak Park and looking for a dining experience that will leave your taste buds singing, Solimar is an absolute must. I can't wait to return and explore more...
Read moreSkip this place. The pizzas were not good. The service was a mess, my drink glass was dirty with lipstick, and I was charged a higher price for the wrong beer and was charged a higher tip amount than I wrote.
The owners response speaks volumes. Again, they got the wrong amounts. I was charged $2 extra for the wrong beer, an additional $2 for the lambrusco (which was listed at $13 on the menu and $15 on my receipt), and $.88 extra on the tip. A $4.88 overcharge altogether.
The tip amounts were added up and written separately as a tip amount, so multiple places to verify. All of the mistakes, bad food, the bad attitude from management when bringing this up lack of accountability is why this poor review was left.
If it wasn't incompetence that caused a higher charge for tip and the wrong drink, then what was it? Malicious intent to overcharge me? What a joke of an...
