I needed a break from wifey's "eat all the oysters in the Gulf" marathon since seafood is not appetizing to me... yeah, the irony of vacationing in the Gulf... so I had high hopes for this place, not expectations mind you. This bbq place was dissappointing due to a couple of issues we encountered: we arrived before 6 pm, it had diners but it was not full, yet we were told they ran out of oysters (really?!) and chicken wings after we waited 10 minutes after ordering said non-existing wings. Big demerit for poor inventory ordering. 2 staples and you run out during dinner service?! The second demerit was the temperature of my pulled pork plate. The sides of fried okra and brunswick stew were hot and tasty enough, but my pork was colder than room temperature. I would have taken heat lamp heated to have my meat warm at least! The hush puppies were freshly fried and tasted fine, but the wifey and I were not pleased with the overall experience. As the only sit down bbq joint on SGI they would have gotten a lot of my business but their poor execution let us down. I would not come back. If you are tired of seafood, maybe come here during lunch, hopefully they will not be out of favorites...

We walked in a little after 8pm on a Friday night. We were the only ones waiting for a table, but the staff completely ignored us. We waited for 15-20 minutes before anyone even acknowledged us and eventually sat us at a table. The service was sub par and the food was even worse. I get it, it's a restaurant on a beach, but that doesn't give you an excuse to have terrible service with terrible food. I ordered a bowl of Brunswick stew. The price was $11 and it tasted like it came straight out of a can and was overcooked with tough barbecue. My son ordered a pork BBQ sandwich and said it had no flavor. My other son ordered the kids chicken strips and the breading was terrible. Hindsight is 20/20 and we should have just gone to the Subway on the island. Unfortunately, because of the location, there is not a whole lot of choice, but I would not return to this restaurant.

Interesting mix of reviews for this place, and I see why. We had a large group vacationing on the island and came in to the Beach Pit at 5:30 for the first time with 17 adults. Here’s what we found: -Food was great (interestingly, the BBQ was the only thing sub-par: over smoked and dry) -Wait staff did their best, hostess chipped in; we were a large group and can’t complain about the service Morgan provided -Manager (we’re told owner) demonstrates the worst customer service any of us has seen from someone running a restaurant. A few examples:

  1. Wait staff put some tables together so we could sit as one group. No sooner had we sat when the Manager/owner came out from back like a storm to tell us we couldn’t have tables like we did... threw the wait staff under the bus, told us he had already been written up 2x by the fire Marshall for the same thing. Offered to move us and did. So far, so good - we’re thinking his rant was a bit much, but all’s good, we’re seated and placing orders. 2). Our group got loud as large groups often do, and with only 3 other tables with customers, certainly we were the loudest. As we’re self-policing our own group to keep it down, up comes the Manager/owner waving hands in a keep it down motion - no problem there. Then he says, “I want you to have fun, but keep it down or I’ll have to ask you to leave”. Ok. Maybe not the best way to convey the message, at bit overboard, but ok.
  2. Several women in our group were getting cold due to the ceiling fan overhead, so one guy reaches up and pulls the cord to stop the fan. Out comes the Manager again to let us know that, again, the “Fire Marshall” requires them to keep the ceiling fans on. Huh?? Either SGI has an absolute *ss for a Fire Marshall, or this owner/manager just gets annoyed by customers. At this point, we’re about done eating when another 15 from our group show up for dinner.... When we told them they should go elsewhere to eat, the steam really started coming out of the owner/manager’s ears! The free market votes with their wallets.

Interestingly, every other restaurant on the island was slam packed with long waits, but the Beach Pit was 1/3 full with no wait. Guess the regulars and repeat island visitors already know the deal with this place. Save yourself the trouble,...

First of all, my mom and I have eaten there 3 times since coming to the island, & this is the first review I've ever given.. Breakfast on Monday was very good & the service was excellent. Monday at lunch we went back & had the bbq, which was very good, & we asked our server to let the owner (John) how tender & smoky it was. NOW we get to Wednesday.. WE ordered grouper sandwiches, & had the same server as the day before.. DON'T EVER ASK TO SP lEAK TO THE MANAGER IF THERE'S A PROBLEM WITH YOUR ORDER. John is a JACKA$$.. I ordered the grilled grouper, which they FRIED. But instead of being my mother her order &which was TINY & COLD, they waited to bring g the n both at the same time. My mom politely asked our AWESOME SERVER to speak to the owner. She came back & said he was too busy to come talk to us, & offered a measly 10% DISCOUNT. When my mom insisted on better customer service, the owner came out & after explaining the situation AGAIN, John said, "We're giving you 10%, that's what we're doing, you shouldn't have eaten it.."🙄 & walked away. MY MOTHER IS A CONSIDERATE PERSON & WOULDNT HAVE WAITED ANOTHER 20 MINUTES & HAVE MY FOOD THEN BE COLD, but it appears John doesn't understand mothers who put their children ahead of themselves. Since my mother couldn't get a resolution, she reassured the server that she did her job well, then spoke to the other 5 tables in the room & told them to beware of what happens when you complain. Within 5 seconds, John hurriedly came back to the table & demanded that we leave. My mother is NOT in the habit of making a scene, but this arrogant jackass blew her off with a wave if the hand. Her verbal recommendations got his attention quick, fast & in a hurry, & we were told to leave.. I would've love to plant my palm across his arrogant face, but im not getting arrested for assault.. I did, however get between he & my mom & tell him he wasn't going to sleak to her that way.. So we went from a 10% discount on one meal to 100% discount on both.. My mom ALWAYS PAYS HER BILL, & DOESNT ASK FOR ANYTHING FREE, but this was RIDICULOUS.. As we left, I tipped our server (she was terrified of John, btw) & asked the owners name, but both servers I asked were brand new & didn't know.. HIGH...

Loved the location to where we were staying..the restaurant was cute..that's where the love stops. So every items is priced individually, so no matter what you order if you want a meat or potatoes you will pay for them individually. Next when our server Megan came to the table she didn't introduce herself she just asked for our drinks. A few minutes later she comes back and says "My mind went blank what did y'all want to drink" we told her large Ojs she then comes and asks us what we wanted to eat I said I had a question about their French toast, that does it have to have powdered sugar and creme filling she said no I said ok when y'all say 2 slices are y'all saying a piece cut into a triangle as 2 pieces she said yes I said ok Id like 4 slices she said with powdered sugar and creme filling 🤔 umm no please I don't want either..considering I had just asked her if I had to have it bc I didn't want it..my husband ordered a sausage egg and cheese biscuit with a bowl of cheese grits. When we were done ordering she picks up our menus and as she's walking away tells us her name was Megan literally simultaneously picking them up and walking away. Got our food and it was less than desirable, my French toast was so soggy in the center I had to just eat the ends, as well as it wasnt 4 slices it was 8 it's 4 pieces of bread sliced in 2s 🤦🏽‍♀️ the hash browns were the best part aside from the OJ. My husband's biscuit was so doughy it was barely edible he said the sausage and egg were the best part. Our tab was $48 for a sausage eggs &cheese biscuit with a side of cheese grits and French toast with hash browns w/cheese the freakin OJ was $5 a cup absolutely ridiculous. We travel all over and have a family of 6 and we eat at expensive restaurants this was ridiculous without good food or service. I had my credit card out waiting for her to come back, I didnt even see the check before bc I had waited so long I just told her to take the card. First and last time I'd visit here, surely at almost $50 for this I'm glad my 4 kids weren't with us for...
