I was super excited to try Tia’s and really wanted to like this place, so much so that we came here two nights in a row (previous night had an hour long wait and they were out of certain things like rice that we wanted with our order). I love that they have a vegan menu with several items including papusas, nachos, and vegan tamales.
While the food was very tasty, they really messed up my order; I was super explicit about everything I ordered being vegan and ordered the vegan papusas, vegan nachos, and vegan tamale (I told them how excited I was to find this number of vegan options).
The nachos and tamale came out first; the nachos were awesome, and I started eating the tamale only to discover it had what looked and tasted like real chicken (I haven’t eaten chicken in 18 years and this had a different taste from the veg chicken I’ve eaten). I went up and spoke with the owner and turns out I was right - the order was entered in incorrectly. They said sorry and made me a new tamale. Despite this being a pretty big mistake I was chill about it and didn’t make a fuss.
Next we got our papusas; I started eating mine and realized it was made with real cheese; it was very stringy and I wasn’t sure, so asked and sure enough, they messed up that order too.
I really wanted to like and support Tia’s; small family owned business, vegan menu, tasty and authentic food (and pretty unique vs other cuisines you can find in UT). But mistakes like this are unacceptable, let alone two mistakes in one meal, and really dampened my opinion of the restaurant. Don’t think I’d come back.
If you’re going to order from the vegan menu, would recommend double checking after paying to ensure the order was entered...

Read moreFirst of all, the pupusas were delicious and I really enjoyed them. Now on to the bad news.
I ordered two pupusas at 11:15. That's it. Not long after a spanish-speaking table arrived, ordered and got their food within 15 minutes. Then another spanish-speaking table arrived and got their food within 15 minutes. At 11:55 I flag the waitress down and ask where my order is, because it's been 40 minutes. Without even asking the kitchen she says "5 to 10 minutes". At 12:15, 20 minutes later, I walk up to her and ask her to double check the kitchen got my order because it's been over an hour and my order wasn't large or complicated, plus it's been a pretty slow day for them (place is only half full). My tone was polite and even a tad apologetic. She actually sneered at me and said that the order was in and she was sure it would be out soon. 10 minutes later I got my food.
I get that sometimes kitchens get backed up, but this did not seem to be the case. I felt that I kept getting kicked to the back of the line and no one ever offered to make it right never checked in on me, etc. Just...
