Checker Board Pizza — Restaurant in Saint Paul

I can’t believe it’s taken me over 3 months of living very much within walking distance of this lil pizza joint to try it. If you find menu info online, ignore it unless it’s a recent pic of the menu. I was first over enthusiastic about some 90s prices on one common website- that’s no fault of the good folks at Checkerboard so let’s get to it.

They only offer take-out and delivery, no dine-in. I called and ordered take-out.

The food: we ordered a medium (12 inch) thin crust w sausage and onion over all of it, 1/2 green pepper, the other 1/2 mushroom. It was a smidge under $21. Quoted on the phone as 20-25 minutes. I didn’t mind that it took a 10ish minutes longer than expected, but it did. A few minutes after we paid, we popped across the street to the package store for some Cowbell beer and returned to wait another couple minutes.

When we got home and looked at the pizza well, it had mushrooms on about 1/4 of the pizza. It looked quite greasy. The middle wasn’t stiff at all, but it wasn’t blatantly soggy. They square cut it, which made the crustless pieces definitely require a napkin. Overall, the flavors and textures were great.

My partner initially commented when he opened the box and scarfed down a tiny corner slice before I could take a pic, “It isn’t what I expected, but it’s good.” And I agree!!

One point deducted due to the combination of inaccurate predicted wait time, missing mushies on 2 slices, grease level, and my final 2 interesting notes:

1. They DO NOT TAKE CASHAPP. If you use a cashapp card even attached to tap to pay or Apple Pay, it will temporarily hold the money, then refund it. This is on a sign inside the store, idk if they inform deliveries of this/if they take a card over the phone?

2. They had single dice for $1 in one of the gumball type machines up...

I ordered a pizza from checkerboard pizza to be delivered they told me it would take an hour and a half the pizza delivery man was Spotted coming out of my building But I never received a pizza. I called back to see what happened to my pizza and they said I canceled the pizza I did not cancel the pizza. I called back three times before they would answer the phone she said I canceled the pizza I asked her what apartment they delivered a pizza to because the pizza delivery man who I know was in the building she told me to knock on every door and ask if there was a pizza delivered there then she told me if I ever ordered a pizza from them again I would be getting toppings I didn’t ask for I’ve been a customer there for a long time they could have just admitted they made a mistake and sold my pizza to someone else in my building. The manager also added that if I ordered a pizza from them ever again I could expect to get toppings that I...

Update 04-06-2020 Finally cracked and ordered a pizza during lockdown due to Covid19. Checkerboard comes through as usual with a perfect pizza and great wings. Five stars all day every day. Thanks Checkerboard! Just moved to the neighborhood and this is the first place I tried. I found my new go-to pizza place. The crust is awesome, sauce is excellent and plenty of cheese and toppings. I'm super picky about pizza because my mom and dad are both from NYC and I've been out there several times so believe me I know my way around a good pizza. This is not NY style pizza but is definitely one of the best "Midwestern" style Za you can get and super reasonable prices.Update #2: 10/11/23 ordered an amazing pizza and wings. My 7.5 year old licked the buffalo sauce clean everything was so good. It's the most consistently good pizza I've ever found. Thank you Checkerboard.
