Mama Thai Kitchen — Restaurant in Saint Paul

Beware if you have allergies or food intolerances! This place had a good review on Find Me GF, an app for people with celiac's and gluten intolerance, so I thought I would check it out. I told the waiter that I have celiacs and that I can't have anything containing gluten. I even explained what gluten is, and how it's commonly found in bread, wheat, noodles, and soy sauce. I asked if they could accommodate for this and the waiter told me they could. I asked what on the menu I could eat and the waiter told me the beef pho would be the only option. When it came out, I again checked with the waiter that this pho was gluten free and the noodles were rice. He said yes, this pho is gluten free. I have gluten ataxia, which causes an immediate reaction when exposed to gluten. I took a sip of the broth and had one of the worst reactions I've had in a very long time. I ended up having to leave immediately to get treatment and my party had to pay full price for my order, even though it just went in the trash.There was definitely gluten, I suspect the broth is made from bouillon cubes. This is definitely not a safe place and they are not at all knowledgeable on common allergies. If the waiter had just said at the beginning that Mama Thai would not be able to accommodate me, that would have been absolutely fine and I would have thanked him for his honesty. Decided to order online for pick up on the way into downtown to meet my husband for lunch at his office. Submitted the order (Pad Thai, Pa Kra Phao, and spring rolls), received the confirmation from Mama Thai, and headed over. When I got there, I was told that they hadn't started my order because their online order system hadn't been turned on.

Why offer online ordering if you don't bother to turn it on and check it? And, if it wasn't turned on, why did I get a confirmation that you received it?

I was told they would make my order if I wanted to wait. Thinking they would get it out to be quickly since the restaurant wasn't busy, I agreed and took a seat.

20 minutes later (much longer than it should have been for a restaurant error), I received my food without so much as a "Sorry for the wait". It was merely handed to me in silence by the teenager working the front counter. When I said, "Thank you", the response was, "Okay."

What great service.

I would like to say I'll never be back but the food was so good. It's one thing to get bad service and bad food because it makes the decision to never patron again easy. But when the food is actually good? I'll probably give them another go. And maybe this time I'll call in my order to ensure they actually start it...

I’ve been to Thailand and eaten this food all over the states. This place is Absolutely delicious!! My husband and I just split a pad Thai plate - plenty for 2 + some of their Korean wings. The wings were crispy and the sauce was thick & sweet and just the right level of heat!! The pad Thai, with pork, was some of the best I’ve ever had. Came out hot and with plenty of crushed peanuts which make it so good! The Thai tea was perfection also. Our son had the beef pho and loved it! His boba tea came out with whipped cream on top - beautiful presentation!!The space is warm and clean with each table having many condiments available.
