While getting caught up in Brian Ingram's Hope restaurants, I overlooked this Saint Paul gem. I stopped here two times and plan to return often. The Pan Roasted Chicken was funky and oddly delicious. It introduced me yo new food spices. The Korean Chicken Wings are fantastic. Unless I am at Peppers and Fries, I am not big on burgers. However, their burgers look amazing and that will be my next visit.Saint Paul deserves a restaurant like Pillbox Tavern, and I hope they're met with long term success. **UPDATE:** Since this review, I had to update. Twice I visited the Pillbox Tavern and had to leave as no server came to my table. The bar is large, the staff is young. They like to huddle and talk in tue corners. Be sure to get their attention upon arrival if you visit. What a disappointment.

We ate dinner here on a Monday evening in July 2025. We arrived at 5pm and people were just starting to arrive so there was plenty of seating. We elected to sit on the patio because it was a really nice day. We started with a cocktail and they were delivered quickly and were made just right. The Pillbox tavern has a twist on the Minnesota classic “juicy lucy” which is a hamburger stuffed with cheese and cooked. The jalapeño popper juicy Lucy is stuffed with pepper jack cheese and jalapeño peppers and then dipped in batter and deep fried, placed in a bun and topped with cream cheese and apricot jam. I loved it! It was sweet, savory and crunchy all at the same time. Can’t wait to try this again. The service was great and the waitstaff was friendly. This was a great dining experience!

Our server, Brandi L was friendly, attentive & capable. We had a large group & called ahead to make sure they could accommodate us, Brandi had our table ready to go so we were able to sit immediately upon arrival. Cocktails and food came out timely & everything tasted great. I highly recommend the Brussel sprouts appetizer! There was one error on a sandwich which was requested with no cheese, but they rectified it promptly, with minimal wait on the reorder. The portions were arguably on the modest side for the prices, but that is likely standard for the heart of St. Paul these days. Who needs leftovers anyhow? We’ll be back! Thank you very much Brandi & crew at the Pillbox Tavern.

Unfortunately, I had the worst service I've had in years at the Pillbox Tavern. My friend and I ordered dinner before a concert. His came out in time but mine hadn't. 25 minutes had passed, my friend by then had finished his meal, but I still hadn't received my food. So I asked another waiter to look into where my food was. 10 more minutes passed before my food came out without the fries I ordered and the catsup for my burger. I asked the other waiter who delivered my meal to please bring me the fries and catsup but they never arrived.

At this point I hadn't seen our original waitress in over 45 minutes, my food was getting cold. Now, I was getting frustrated, there was no other staff around for me to ask for assistance. As a result, I went into the entrance of the kitchen to ask if someone could bring me my fries and catsup. I finally got my fries and catsup, but then the manager come over and reprimanded me for going into the kitchen. I told her there was no staff around, including our waitress to ask for assistance. She said to me, "don't ever go into our kitchen again". I said, "that will be no problem because I won't be coming back to the Pillbox". Then the manger said "good - I hope you don't". Finally, after a hour later our original waitress came back to give us our bill. They didn't even offer an apology for messing up my order, or offer to comp my meal for their bad service. Do yourself a favor and find another place to eat and drink.

My reply to the owner. Obviously you and your manager were not present when I was waiting for my food and asking for assistance in the kitchen. How could I have disrupted the other diners while standing at the entrance to the kitchen? The Pillbox Tavern won't take ANY responsibility for their lack of service. Had you have done so I would've not...

Do not go to Pillbox Tavern! I wasn’t going to write a review until I saw how their management responded to a complaint my wife left. We’ve been to Pillbox twice now. The first time we had dinner and honestly, their food is very sub par and overpriced. The burger lacked flavor, was dry, and then they will charge you $17 to eat it. Fast forward to this past weekend when our grooms party walked in after a wedding for a few drinks. We went to the bar to order drinks and the bartender refused and told us to ask the waitress to help us. When we were finally helped, we ordered soft pretzels and what we received was something that resembled card board with cold cheese to dip. At midnight, we were told it was last call (1 hour before they actually closed). While we were paying our tabs, the bartender began to blast screaming music and motioning us to the door. I’ve honestly never been treated with such bad service at a restaurant. My wife left the same complaint as I am now, and managements response was we were just highly intoxicated and the staff was “trained to recognize when a situation could get out of hand”. This couldn’t be further from the truth as my wife is pregnant and some others weren’t even drinking. I will never go back to Pillbox knowing how their staff and management...

If you want to make sure your bar is keeping you safe from COVID 19, stay away from the Pillbox in downtown St. Paul. They don't care and it's obvious. On July 2, I went in and positioned myself 6 feet from anyone and ordered. Before my order arrived, I already had to move as someone sat a foot from me. Then someone moved to within a foot again. I asked them to give me my 6 ft. They did, but they were replaced by another person. I asked the bartender if they were enforcing 6 ft. He said "you know how hard that is to do?" I left and wrote them a message of complaint. Today, Nov 1, I though I'd try again. The exact same thing happened that someone moved next to me. I moved. I asked the server if they were enforcing the 6 foot rule. "I don't know about that." was the answer. I told the bartender to cancel my order, I'm leaving and he told me there were other tables I could sit. My answer was that I should not be the one who has to move. This place has no intention of following the governors instructions. If you want to remain COVID free, you probably want to avoid this place. They apparently...
