Archies Tropical Cuisines — Restaurant in Salisbury

I have been wanting to try this restaurant for a couple of years now and I was so excited to have finally been able to! I am just coming out of the hospital after intensive internal radiation for stage 4 cancer, so I was unable to go in person unfortunately, and had to have my order DoorDashed, but I was still so excited to be able to try it, given the wonderful reviews it has! Unfortunately, I did not have a good experience. I really wanted to try the oxtails, but those are a pickup only item according to doordash. So I went with the jerk chicken that also has excellent reviews. This was the only entree that we ordered, as my husband is afraid of spice, he was just going to try my food. We ordered several sides as well, truffle mac, collard greens, cabbage, beef patties, oxtail fries, strawberry cheesecake, and a side of the mango salsa. Unfortunately, we received a message from our DoorDasher saying that they were out of truffle mac and jerk chicken, saying that they could substitute it for another dish which was fine with me, but then was told that the store refunded the cost of the out of stock items instead. This was the only entree that we ordered and given the store wasn't going to substitute, there was not much point in continuing with the order at all, considering that we were still going to wind up having to order dinner from somewhere else. I communicated to the DoorDasher that if the items couldn't be substituted I would need to cancel the order, at which point the DoorDasher abandoned our order all together. I tried to contact the store several times, there was no answer, it went straight to a voicemail box that was not set up. I tried again to get back in touch with the next DoorDasher that picked up our order, and was met with no response, either from the DoorDasher or the store. When our order arrived, it consisted of oxtail fries, collard greens, cabbage, two beef patties, and one mango salsa. Although we were refunded for the jerk chicken and truffle mac, the strawberry cheesecake was not refunded and was not included in our order, when it was all said and done we paid over $35 for four sides. My husband and I each split the sides, but were still hungry an overall disappointed in the experience. I leave reviews at every restaurant, so I will leave a review at this one as well. As regards to what food we did get. Oxtail fries: really delicious, 8/10. Collard greens: pretty good, lots of vinegar though. 7/10. Cabbage: tasty but basic. 5/10. Beef patties: pretty good. 5/10. Mango salsa: absolutely fantastic. 10/10. Overall experience with this restaurant: 1/10. I really wish I could have rated this restaurant higher, I was so excited to eat here. But the frustration due to lack of communication, only getting a fraction of what we ordered and being charged for items that I didn't receive, superseded my excitement and ultimately the sides that we did get just weren't delicious enough for us to eat here again. One of my best friends and I visited yesterday and we thoroughly enjoyed everything about the place. 10 out of 10!!!! It's a whole vibe- music, atmosphere, food- ALL OF IT.!!! I regret that I did not know about it sooner, because I come to Salisbury from time to time since my Doc is in the area.We will definitely be visiting it again and several of my friends have asked about it after I posted pics and my experience! I got jerk chicken and she got curried chicken and it was so good! There was a couple from High Point who got several dishes, including red snapper and they talked back and forth with us about how all their dishes were really good as well! The decor and the music is a bonus- even the bathroom had beautiful artwork and was super clean. Thanks again for the delicious food and dining experience!!!! I hardly ever leave reviews but felt inclined to do so after my first experience at Archie’s. I placed an order over the phone around 8:40pm, twenty minutes before they closed. The woman who took my order was so jovial and kind. I arrived around 8:55 and was greeted with the same positive energy. I ordered the oxtails, Mac and cheese along with rice and peas. I have family from Jamaica and have had my fair share of oxtails in the Charlotte area and beyond. These are by far the best that I’ve had in NC. They were tender, flavorful and slightly spicy. The gravy was also delicious and spread generously over the rice. The same can be said about the Mac and cheese. Some of the best I’ve had. I was mostly impressed by how fresh the food still was, even though they were preparing to close for the evening. This was an incredible meal, one you should try if you’re ever in the area. I’ll be back soon to try other options....
