Yelp says they're open till 8pm but Google Maps says 6:30pm. Either way they're already out of food by 6. So it must be good, lol. Will update if I ever get to try it.
Update: Unfortunately I finally got to try it and it's the worst African food I've had in SLC and the second worst African food I've had in the United States.
I love African food. But I've never had Somali food, or any African food, like this, and not in a good way. No variety in flavor, no balance, everything is just sweet: the bread, the pasta, the meat...
Plus I found not 1 but 2 human hairs in the food, not my color or texture so definitely not mine, and deeply buried enough that they definitely were introduced before I opened the container, so again, can't be my own. I ended up throwing most of my meal away.
I'd give it a 1 but I can't bring myself to rate an African restaurant less than a 2. Take note that this is a 2 with an asterisk.
Do yourself a favor and go to Somali Restaurant (Nutrition & Ethnic foods) or Midnimo, or even Noor in the same parking lot if you have the time to wait. Even Horn of Africa, who is out of most of their menu for the foreseeable future, is a better option.
Or expand your horizons to Swahili, Ethiopian, or even Afghani or Peruvian food, which share some similarities and have restaurants nearby. I...
Read moreIf you live in Salt Lake and haven’t tried this place, you’re missing out! It’s located on Redwood Road in a little plaza area with parking in the front. It’s a very busy place that’s always flooded with people. On one side they have a market, and on the other, the restaurant.
We always take our food to go because it’s busy and the area is a bit small. Kamal is the owner, and he is very generous. The first time we went there he gave us a few sambusas and black ginger tea on the house. They also include a banana and a bottle of water free with every meal. He was very hospitable. I suggest you order before you go as it can take them some time to prepare the food, but it is definitely worth it!
We always get the chicken soukar with rice, as well as the goat meat with rice. The rice is very fragrant and appetizing. We LOVE their green sauce. It’s so spicy and delicious. They give a lot of rice—it lasts us two meals! Even if you don’t know anything about Somali food, you should still stop by. If you’re afraid to try anything else, you can’t go wrong with the chicken soukar and rice. You won’t be...
Read moreDon’t let the outside deter you. The menu is pretty simple but delicious. We had the fish and rice (omg that fish was fried perfectly and the seasoning was delicious), KK with beef (reminds me of beef chow fun in that they use chapati bread as the noodle so it’s similar in size/thickness) and sambusa (I prefer the chicken over the beef). That green sauce is AMAZING and just enough spicy. It’s counter service and you pay after you eat. The chef’s son? was so gracious and welcoming. He made the experience so pleasant and answered all our questions.
This is my first time in Salt Lake City and first time having Somali food. I’m excited to try more!
PS. Don’t forget to eat the banana as you’re eating your meal. It’s...
