Fred's Fish Fry — Restaurant in San Antonio

Finally made it to Fred's after living 2+ years near one .

We went through the drive thru. The staff could have been a bit more friendly (from taking the order to giving it at the window) but I’ll give them a pass since it was on a Friday during lent (Catholics don’t eat meat) and it was packed. Most places welcome you in a cheerful voice and when you receive your food, they smile and thank you again.

I had the fish and fried oysters. The fish was okay. It wasn't terrible but nothing spectacular either. The "planks" were uniformly square which lead me to believe they are pre-made/frozen. The batter was decent and the fish was tender and flaky.

The oysters were great. They were pretty big. The batter was good and the oysters were tender and tasty. I'll definitely stick to these when I return. You can't get fried oysters quickly anywhere else that I know of.

Overall, the experience was average as well as the food. If you're in the mood for fast food and wish to order fish or oysters, this is a great alternative to most other...

The first impression upon walking into Fred's Fish Fry was how clean the restaurant is. At the counter, we found the staff to be very friendly and helpful, even pointing out that the menu at the register is more complete than the one above the counter. There are pictures of the menu items that I did not pay nearly enough attention to. Though I did notice that the way the food was arranged in the baskets when it was served was quite close to those pictures. That was impressive; the pictures are typically far better than the actual product.

Oh, I forgot to say anything about how the food turned out... I was trying to forget. The fish ... the apparent signature dish! ... is like fish sticks from the freezer section at the grocery. Actually, I have had much better fish sticks from the freezer that I had here. I am really not a fan of the batter in general, but pressed squares of fish is just not right for s restaurant.

And they don't have forks! They must expect us to...

VERY DISAPPOINTED! Possibly the worst "fish" I've ever had. I should've taken a hint when the parking lot was empty and no one was in the drive thru, but I thought, here's my chance to try this talked about SA fish restaurant. Service at the window was great, but I can't believe how rubbery, thin, and just plain bad my fish squares were. I'm gonna chalk it up to ut being a Friday during Lent and they may have made a bunch and just had it sitting there, cuz it definitely was not fresh! The shrimp were not bad, and neither were the onion rings, but they weren't great. The fries were unedible., greasy and leathery . Even the bread had one side that was hard, like when you thaw it. Anyways, this location was really disappointing. I'd really like to give another location a shot when I know they've got to make it fresh. I know they have some die hard fans out there,but this meal at this location did not...
