Deviating from our regular haunt we stopped into JG for a light lunch of a la carte puffy tacos. We had had some last minute, to go, Sunday morning (read that as "afternoon") breakfast tacos here, liked them, and decided to return for a lunch encounter. Chicken and beef puffies with a side of frijoles a la charra sounded good and some guacamole for a little drab ocher visual relief.
Well someone let the air out of the tortillas as they were not the more balloonish corn pillows we were used to getting when ordering puffy tacos. I think these were the Goodyear "run flat" kind; not fully pressurized, but not flat either. And what fiendish rascally rabbit had stolen the salad topping from our order? I think my wife exclaimed "where is the salad topping?" question three times as if that was some sort of fertile spell or medieval incantation that would magically materialize the absent lettuce and tomato.
These flatter tacos were plumped with a mild chicken tinga style filler and a meaty picadillo, then topped with cheese. Add in a dollop of guacamole and suddenly that taco was not one I wanted to put in the rear view mirror. Flavorful corn masa and very little grease were contributing factors to my appreciation of these psi challenged tortillas and the total memory wipe of the missing salad.
The a la charra was a rodeo of flavors with onion and bacon roped in to the broth with evidence both visual and olfactory. I drained that little bowl of beans like it was an 8 second bull ride. Pretty darn slurpin' good.
This may be the "little restaurant that could". Although the menu stated that breakfast ended at 11am, we were told that we could also order from the breakfast menu if we liked. I truly appreciate that kind of kitchen flexibility and the almost automatic answer of "yes" when your question begins with "can you fix (insert your preference of food or ingredients)". Although I have done this before at other restaurants and liked the outcome, I may get them to fix me a bean / bacon / cheese "puffy" next time that is bound to auger some kind of inflating reaction as well as pump up their culinary currency in...
Read moreThis place has gone through some identity changes and one would have thought that lessons would be learned from the history of mistakes this place has been known for, but it seems history really repeats itself. I’ve been to this place over the years and while they have moments where they have pleasantly surprised me, the tragic truth is that it’s been few and extremely far in between times.
I went yet again today to get something to eat. I was pressed for time and this was the only place that didn’t have a long line. I stopped and ordered two torras the piernas and asked to have Cebollas azadas to both. I also ordered two gorditas, one al pastor and another of azada. Starving and with a migraine already, I drove home as quickly as I could to enjoy lunch.
When me and my partner opened up our tortas, we where presented with soggy bread, no fixings on the tortas, and all there was on them was piles of meat and scant amount of cebollas azadas. In the gorditas container was a wilted brown and sad looking salad? Watery tasteless beans, and two gorditas with nothing but meat and scant amount of cheese. One of which was mor dough than anything, not to mentioned getting spoiled salsas.
I know times are tough and many restaurants quality has somewhat taken hits due to the ongoing circumstances, but for a place that wasn’t that great to begin with, to drop any lower? All in all, if you’re looking for good decent Mexican food, I’d recommend Taco Cabana and Taco Bell before telling anyone...
Read moreA place I’ve driven by several times but never stopped. Well that’s changed. I saw a long line in their drive thru and the parking lot was full too so we stopped in, finally. And we are glad we did! It’s such an unassuming place. Looks like ever other taqueria so my expectations weren’t too high. Initially we stopped for bean and cheese tacos and some bacon. We were pleasantly surprised. The beans were nice and seasoned and it came with a good amount of cheese. The tortillas are soft and large and made me feel like they were homemade. The mini tacos were well seasoned and my picky son said he’d go back for those. The quesadilla was so good! It was big and cheesy. The meat was tasty and not bland. I would definitely get this again! The torta was ok. I would prefer a different bread as this one was just not serving the sandwich well. It was too soft and just fell apart. The lengua itself was good. It was soft and tender with a good taste. I did enjoy that. Overall the torta was good but could be improved. I haven’t had their lemonade but heard it’s great. Their sweet tea, though was pretty good. I love a good sweet tea and this one hit. I am very glad we stopped by and will absolutely be back to try their...
