So there I was, minding my own business, headed toward a totally different restaurant when—bam!—Miss Chickpeas Cafetel on Callaghan Road in San Antonio popped up like a delightful little plot twist in my lunch plans. The name alone caught my eye, and I figured, hey, why not shake things up?

The moment I walked in, I was greeted warmly by the staff, which already made this detour feel like a good decision. The vibe? Super cute, cozy, and definitely a place with regulars (always a good sign). And while I’ll be honest—I was a little skeptical about vegan food (I mean, can it really compete with the meaty classics?)—that hesitation melted the second I laid eyes on their baked goods case. Vegan and gluten-friendly treats that looked like they just stepped off a dessert runway? Yes, please.

Before I even touched a menu, I was already halfway sold. I chatted with the friendly staff, and one of them enthusiastically recommended the Breakfast Sammy. Throwing caution—and my meat-loving instincts—to the wind, I ordered it along with a German chocolate cupcake that was practically whispering sweet nothings from the dessert case.

When the food came out, it looked great. The vegan bacon threw me for a second—it definitely looked different—but once I took a bite, I was pleasantly surprised. Not your traditional bacon texture, but flavorful and satisfying in its own right. The ciabatta roll was soft with just the right amount of chew, and the whole sandwich worked really well together.

What made the experience even better? The staff came to check on me, genuinely interested in how I was enjoying my first dive into their menu. We chatted a bit, and they let me know their baked goods come from their local bakery right here in San Antonio. Major bonus points for supporting local.

All in all, Miss Chickpeas Cafetel was a refreshing, feel-good surprise. It’s a great lighter option when you want something satisfying but not heavy. I’ll definitely be back to explore more of their breakfast offerings—and probably sneak in another cupcake (or two).

If you’ve ever been curious about vegan food but hesitant to try, let Miss Chickpeas be your gateway. It was mine—and I'm glad I...

I was so happy to find a vegan bakery for my son with allergies. Upon arriving, the man that greeted me was so nice and friendly. He showed me the vegan/gluten free options and made sure he wasn’t gonna cross contaminate anything. I asked if they used nuts and he replied, I don’t think so. So I grabbed a cheesecake, cupcake and cookie cake. I took them home and set up my sons birthday party. Later that night we went to do cake and he chose his cheesecake. He took a tiny little bite and started going into anaphylactic shock. I rushed him to the er. By time we got to the er my son was struggling to breath, his face was swollen and he was constantly throwing up. The doctors were able to help him. They told me had we not got him there when we did, he could have died. The day after this happened, I called the bakery to ask for a list of ingredients so I could narrow down what could have caused this. The same guy gave me the bakers number and apologized a lot. He was so sweet and I put no blame on him. Upon calling the baker, she didn’t want to give me a list of ingredients. Instead she wanted me to tell her my sons allergies and then she’d let me know if it was in the cheesecake. Come to find out they blend cashews in the cheesecake which is what did it. She told me if I texted her his allergies, she’d send me what he could have from the bakery. I have yet to hear back from her, not that I would ever use this place again. No apology from her, no reaching out to ask how my sons doing! Nothing. In fact, the only thing she said was “I’ll make sure he knows for next time that we use nuts. He’s new”. Y’all need to have a list of ingredients for your employees. I’m not sure what all the secrecy is about the ingredients but if nothing else, let your employees have a list to be able to say “yes we use this” or “no we don’t use that” my kid should have never went through that. If you have allergies to anything, I highly recommend avoiding this place unless they make allergies known. (Photo of my 6 year old about 30/45 minutes after the doctors got meds in him and they...

Overall, I really loved the variety of items available and I will be back to try some things that I haven’t tried yet. I ordered a bunch of different things so that I could taste around the menu, but I barely scratched the surface on what they offer. Of everything that I tried, I would get the Texas sheet cake and the chocolate croissant again for sure. Those two were both great. I didn’t have either on the same day that I bought the other items and they still tasted as amazing as if they had been made that day. I heated the croissant in my oven with a bowl of water so it wouldn’t dry out and you couldn’t tell the difference between this and a regular croissant. I ate the sheet cake cold out of the fridge and it was phenomenal dense and well flavored, not too sweet but very satisfying.

The kolaches that I ordered were a last minute decision when I picked up my pastries. I’m glad I tried them, especially because they are HUGE kolaches. I’ll be trying their other flavors because I wasn’t blown away by the fillings but I was blown away by the texture and how well made they were. The filing wasn’t bad, I just wanted a little more flavor and I didn’t think the jalapeño sausage kolache was spicy at all and wanted more spice there.

The same is true for their cupcakes, I really liked the cakes but didn’t particularly enjoy the ones I tried all that much, which is more about me than their flavors. They were as good, if not better then the big cupcake places including H‑E‑B and Sam’s so swapping these for some other places is something I will do. I felt like the oatmeal creme pie was too sweet and could be balanced with a cookie with a little more flavor and i thought the maple pecan donut would be better balanced with a little more salt but otherwise these were good too. I will definitely be back to try other donuts, because the texture on the donut was amazing both the day I got it and the next day when I ate the other half...
