We headed to San Antonio for the HOKA Bandera 50k. My son was running, and while we were dialed in to his race, we were also dialed to one other thing- Texas BBQ! A friend said we had to try Rudy’s Country Store in San Antonio. Done deal, we got off the plane and headed directly to Rudy’s. My first take- this place is a gas station that has a bbq pit out back! I automatically loved it. You know what they say, “When In Rome”. We walked past the gas pumps and followed the sign that said BBQ that way ➡️. We waited on long line of hungry Texans. It was finally our turn and we announced we are in from NY for a race, can anyone help us order. The workers could not be more hospitable, not only did they guide us to the ribs, the brisket and the sausage, but they also threw in complimentary ribs and 2 brisket sandwiches! We sat in the rear of the gas station in what looked like a makeshift restaurant seating area with folding tables and aluminum folding chairs with checkered tablecloths. Honestly, I wouldn’t have wanted this to go any other way than it did. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was amazing and the best part- we felt at home!

I’ve been to several Rudy’s BBQ Restaurants, but have never written a review for them. When you enter Rudy’s, you wait in line to give your order to the employee at the counter. They take your order and call out the meat order to the staff that pulls out the type of meat you’ve requested. The food is weighed and placed and butcher paper. You pay the employee that takes your order. After paying, stop by the condiment bar to pick up pickles, onions or peppers. You then choose your seating at picnic tables. It is a very relaxed and low key place to eat. Now let’s talk about the barbecue. Rudy’s BBQ offers some of the best pork ribs I've had—tender and packed with flavor. We ordered the half chicken and it was excellent as well, juicy with a nice smoky finish. The potato salad is decent, but it doesn't quite match the standout quality of the meats. On the weekend they offer prime rib, which is excellent. Overall, a solid BBQ spot!

Rudy’s BBQ is one of my favorites but after going to the Nakoma location for lunch today we will never return to a corporate restaurant, only franchises. Got 1/2lb brisket, 1/2lb turkey, potato salad and cream corn with 2 drinks. First off, the turkey was lukewarm at best with no flavor and the brisket was just about the same but fatty and still very little flavor (seasoning or smoke). Took the turkey back and they gave us fresh that was then hot but was dry and lacking flavor. Potato salad had little flavor and the cream corn was great. Tea didn’t even taste sweet though. Staff was friendly but were evidently slacking on pit duties especially in the middle of the day. People can say what they want about Bill Miller and others but what we experienced today was terrible. I would hate to be from out of state or country walking into this place expecting “real Texas barbecue”. This definitely isn’t it.

I don't think I've ever been dissatisfied with a Rudy's experience in the last 30 years. That changed today, with this location... I've never gone into a Rudy's where the staff didn't greet you, wouldn't look you in the eyes, seemed completely disconnected from the ordering process, and seemed to just not care about assisting you. There were 5 employees (including what looked to be a manager; black button down shirt, and long black hair) standing around behind the counter. I'm looking at them, and finally had to ask if something was happening here that we had just come into the middle of. The employee said no there wasn't, laughed with her colleagues about something they were discussing, then asked us what sides we wanted, then turned away, came back again and asked us how she could help us. I gave her our order, then she left, and came back and asked again what we ordered. I just stared at her. Finally she got the picture: she's on duty, we're paying customers, and it's her job to pay attention and assist us, and she then got serious and remembered what we had just told her we wanted to order. But the other staff looked unaffected. The manager was there witnessing it, but he seemed to be pondering something, something other than the managing this restaurant.

Then later the manager came into the dining area and sat down at a table to start working on some paperwork or perhaps he was drawing. What he didn't do was clean the table directly next to him that was full of trash from someone that left it there. I was so surprised that I took a photo of it. Out of respect, I'm not going to post it, but I will happily provide the photo to Rudy's headquarters staff upon request.

I really dislike being so negative about a Rudy's, but both myself and my wife felt like the experience at this location today was the worst we've ever had at a Rudy's, and if it's an ongoing issue here, or at Rudy's in general, then we feel that others shoukd know our experience.

I don't know the next time I'll want to spend my money at Rudy's, but I know one thing is for certain, it won't ever be at...

Literally GARBAGE.. don’t go here,,!,, We spent $55 and got …the food displays in the general area empty and looks very unsanitary they serve cold old food, the stuffed potatoes was warmed up and not even the cheese melted . Overcooked must of been yesterdays left over. Cream corn seemed to have been quickly thrown together corn was hard not fully cooked. The supposedly turkey on the potatoes seemed to have came out of a bag uniformed cubed cuts definitely not bbq or smoked meat. The ribs also took them 20 mins and served it to me wrapped as if they wanted to hide the ribs were not fresh and just warmed.. The banana bread and peach cobbler it’s on the counter prepackage we bought that as well. Took it home and wind up throwing it out as it was old as well. What a waste of money. The only thing that was safe was the bottle soda I bought …I should have known better when you walk in and don’t sell anything cooking I wonder if the corporate office knows that this location is representing the chain on left over old cold food … someone needs to secret shop this location. Maybe a health department needs to visit. Hmmm Good Idea! … Seems Mason likes to respond the same way to all the negative reviews but Ironically that Manager was interviewing some one just steps away from the add on station and if he didn’t notice the empty unsanitary area himself that explains why I didn’t bother to express my disgust! I have visit Laredo location my very first visit and bragged about Rudy’s. Took my husband out for a date in San Antonio and totally embarrassed. Nothing...

“DON’T GO BEWARE!!”On the Thursday 8/8/2024 at the Rudy’s @ (Nakoma) I went to try a new Location as I was in the area. I walked in hungry for a LATE LUNCH around 3pm till 4pm. Ready to take on some good ole Brisket and I was told they had none “Only Fat Leftovers and Wanted to Serve It To Me”.” I TOLD THEM I DIDNT WANT TO EAT THE FAT” Honestly Who in Their Right Mind Would? I then asked for a sausage link and the cook line butcher sneezed all over MY food. Then proceeded to walk fast in my direction with a sample for me to try, “WHICH I REFUSED” then after he tried to covertly mask what he had just done. Now I could have walked away at this point but I already had potato salad and corn on the tray. At that point I just walked away with the sneezed sausage which I was just going to throw away and not make a big deal about. I put my tray down and continued to get my drink. When I did the very same young man butcher who was unprofessional with me was with the cashier giggling about me on how I looked. I’m so disappointed about this Rudy’s location. Anyone who wants good food spend your hard earned money elsewhere. I felt belittled here This place is very unpleasant unprofessional and if you want dry food that taste like it’s been sitting out for days and rude customer service this place takes the cake. This place is the worst Rudy’s I’ve ever been too. I’m a BIG BAR-B-QUE fan. NOW I have to reconsider going into a Rudy’s ever again. My advice is to go any where...
