I've reviewed Sherrys Texan for seafood at their old location, but this was both my first visit since they moved to Goliad Rd, and the first time trying their Chicken Fried Steak I've heard so much about. After eating this chicken fried steak I had to seriously consider my best CFS rankings.. and I think this may be the #1 chicken fried steak. Bobbys is a close 2nd, (only because I had 1 really good one, and one that was not as good as this one). Check my CFS list for a full list.
Initial Impression The location is much smaller than where they used to be, I arrived just before the dinner rush at about 5:20 and the restaurant was already 80% full. It took a second to be noticed and seated, and by the time my food arrived the restaurant was packed, with a small line of people waiting outside the front door.
Big Texan Chicken Fried Steak The Big Texan Chicken Fried Steak is a 12oz steak served with a choice of potatoes (mash, fries, or red potatoes), a salad and some Texas toast.
The salad and drink came out decently quick, the salad was good, nothing really different. Then the steak arrived, with the red potatoes I ordered. The waitress brought a small bowl of butter packets, as I asked if the potatoes were seasoned or anything and she said no.
The steak had a nice crispy crust that was flakey, not hard like some places where it crunches and is hard to chew. This was light and crisp, almost like a corn flake or tortilla crust batter. Honestly the crust on the steak here, its flavor, and its texture are what set this steak apart from everywhere else. The couple onion rings that came on the plater were great as well. If your an onion ring fan, Id recommend an order of these to share. They had a great breading as well, and were thick and tender, cooked perfectly.
The size of the steak was pretty good, not an overly huge steak, but a decently sized one that I knew I wasn't going to finish in a single sitting. The gravy had good favor, the meat was tender, easy to cut and chew, with good flavor and texture across the board.
Overall Impression I had given them a high score for the seafood and again, the chicken fried steak didnt let me down. So far everything Ive ordered from Sherry's has been excellent. I'll definitely be coming back to try some more items. The food is made fresh & flavorful, the portions on the large plates are huge (Texas CFS & Fishermans Platter) and the prices compared to other places locally for what you get are really good.
Other than the new space being a bit small, the lot filling up, and there being a wait during peak hours, the quality of the food seems to have held up despite the recent move.

Read moreLocated on the South Side of San Antonio and being from that area for many years. I never heard of it until my wife wanted to try a new chicken fried steak. The Chicken Fried Steak "place" of the South Side is Bud Jones.
We go Sunday for lunch, the place is spilling with folks, and there were people standing to get a table. So far so good, if people are waiting then it must be good. We’re seated in about 10-15 minutes.
This place reminds me of the small-town restaurant, you know, the one everyone goes to you. It's got stuffed deer heads, fish mounted on the wall, checkerboard curtains, wood trim, and even an Atari arcade machine from the 1980's!
The staff is very nice, responsive, but overwhelmed. No fault on them, remember, the place was overflowing! No other reason for so many people, the food must be good, right?
We order delicious looking onion rings for an appetizer. The onion rings were fresh, the batter light and flaky. However, something was off, neither the onion rings nor batter had any flavor. No problem, nothing a bit of ketchup can't fix.
Wife orders chicken fried steak with mash potatoes in white gravy, another guest orders chicken fried chicken with green beans in white gravy, and I order the chicken tenders with extra crispy French fries.
We receive our meals, nice and hot, and a good size. However, here is the huge let down. The food was bland, no seasoning or flavor. The breading just that, taste of bread, just like the onion rings.
Even though fried, the steak and chicken, tasted boiled. Yes, that is what salt & pepper are for, but food should already come out with some flavor, any flavor.
We decide to take some of our meal to go, and to try some dessert. The only item on the menu, chocolate chip cookies. Double sadness! I was imaging pie, cobbler, or some bread pudding. The types of desserts that you would find at small town restaurant. Again, dessert is not a requirement, but it was lacking.
tl;dr Restaurant with good reviews and known for chicken fried steaks. Environment gives off that small-town restaurant feel. Staff was very nice, but food bland and...
Read moreI've heard a lot about this place and to be honest I wasn't very impressed. The salad for starters is completely boring. It's literally just lettuce with a copy strings of purple cabbage. I expected just a little more from a business that seems a bit infamous in San Antonio.. maybe a little carrots or tomatoes. My mother in law comes her often for the chicken fried steaks she really enjoys it however I had to try the seafood as they claim to have the best seafood in town. It was alright. The fish was nice and crispy but there was stuff in it that seemed like scales. I'm not exactly to sure if that's what it was that I was having to spit out but that was the texture it felt like in my mouth. My baked potato was hard and slightly cool which was a bit off putting. The onion rings were great though. I really enjoyed the onion rings but it was disappointing that it took half way through my meal for the waitress to finally return to the table to see how we were so I could finally request ketchup. (And they were far from being under staffed.) I had only been here one other time before back when they were at the old location. That time I got the club sandwich which was good but you really can't screw up a sandwich. I don't think I will be...
