Texas | Five Meals I Ate in San Antonio

My family stopped at Tong’s Thai Thursday for dinner. We were greeted on the patio and asked if we’d like to sit inside or outside. It was a gorgeous evening and the kids wanted to sit outside. We had a table next to the pond with the coy fish. The kids loved watching the fish while waiting for our dinner
Which didn’t take very long at all to come out. We typically stick to the same menu at all the Thai restaurants we go to. Regarding the menu
We had to scan a menu from our phone. I MUCH prefer a paper copy in front of me. The online ordering was confusing. So having a hard copy would be nice. Appetizer: cheese Rangoons - the kids picked these. They were good. Lacking on filling. My daughter loved them still. The food came out at the same time as the appetizer. Also to note, the water tasted funny that we had to drink. Chicken pad Thai (medium spice) x2 - perfect spice level for one but the other was much hotter. So I docked a star for inconsistent spice levels. Drunken noodles - husband said they were delicious. Orange chicken with steamed rice - kids LOVED this. I felt the flavor was lacking. But was good for the kids. It’s some decent Thai food. We’ve tried several places in San Antonio and have a few more recommendations to try before we come back. We live a ways away from here so we would come back if in the area again. The patio was really lovely. The table was high for my youngest daughter to eat at comfortably (she’s 6 and tall for her age, but she mentioned how it was hard for her to eat). I’m chalking up the inconsistency to it being close to closing time. We appreciated the prompt service. *only one photo because everyone was hungry and wanted to eat.

The wife and I have a favorite Thai restaurant already here in San Antonio, but we decided to give Tong's Thai Restaurant a try. The restaurant inside and out is incredible. The decor inside is very cool and fits the Thai theme very nicely. However, the amazing Thai decor and theme is somewhat ruined by the tv's and American music playing in the background. Would be nice if there was traditional Thai music playing, and, in my opinion, just do away with the tacky tv's. First impressions of the food, well, both our plates were dirty, so we had to ask for clean ones. The food for the most part was pretty good, however one of the dishes wasn't all that great, it was really bland and lacked flavor. We ordered 4 main courses, so 3 out of 4 isn't too bad. We ordered two extra side dishes of rice, (the menu said extra rice dishes are $1), but we were charged $2 per dish. We asked our waitress about the discrepancy, and she informed us they had to increase their prices for extra rice dishes. Before leaving we decided to take another look at the menu, maybe we misread it... nope, $1 for a side of rice. Would be nice if our waitress had said something about it when we placed the order. Makes me wonder, what other price increases did they tack on without telling us. Our waitress was attentive during service, which was great, but she seemed to forget about us when we were finished. Had us sitting there for a while waiting for our check. Takeaway, food was just ok, service and customer attention needs work, and in my opinion not worth the $70 we spent. Would we go back, no.

Edit: Well, it got worse, again. Last time we went, we were seated next to a table saw. WTH. We had to demand to be moved, although you could still hear it throughout lunch service. Service is still slow, except that when someone does appear, they're in too much of a hurry to acknowledge you. Staff are obviously not happy. Good luck getting refills or a second beer. Food is great, but nothing special for the price, which is higher than other Thai places nearby. My colleagues and my family refuse to eat here anymore and I agree. It's a shame after decades of being one of my favorite places, but Tong's is no bueno. Thai Curry and Mon's are both far better options, to the right and left, respectively, on Broadway as you approach from Tong's.

Seriously, Tong's, what is the point of constant remodeling if y'all only want to do takeout? Also, if takeout is the new focus, why are my to go orders messed up like 50% of the time? Is 25% too low a tip for decent service now? Are y'all just laundering money now like a high end Fred's Fish Fry? What is wrong over there? I'll miss my extra spicy Basil Bowl but I'm not coming back. đŸ˜Ș

6/2024: I've returned and the service and food are better. The service is still somewhat inattentive but I can get my drinks ordered. I have to flag staff down, though, instead of relying on them to check in. Certainly, they're not quick to notice that you need something on their own. The food has become consistently good, again. It also comes quickly. However, I've only visited at lunch after my last dinner visit (review below). I've left it because I can't say whether dinner service has improved or not.

Prior review: The food is still mostly great and the new remodel looks good. However, the atmosphere is affected by the takeout table piled with orders and positioned in the dining room and the service has declined. Obviously, takeout is the priority now, because our service was extremely slow, while takeout orders flew out of the kitchen.

We waited on menus, none of which have prices. Only the online menu has prices. Dishes were brought and set in a pile. Food came much later. For some reason, staff kept taking condiments off the tables, even though we were still eating. We waited a very long time for our bill and longer for the bubble teas we ordered.

I felt like we were being rushed as the table was constantly being bussed but then we waited forever at every stage of the meal for what we needed. The only thing they were efficient about was refilling my kids' sodas without asking, so none of them ate their food. Meanwhile, I gave up trying to get another round for my wife and myself. Overall, it was clear that we weren't important enough to compete with the customers who didn't care to dine in, even though we were ordering alcohol.

As far as the food, it was mostly up to the standard you'd expect at Tong's. The pineapple fried rice was good. Crab Supreme had plenty of crab and my wife lived it. The lo mein my son ordered was bland, but I've never had it at Tong's before, he enjoyed it. The Tom Yam seemed to have white mushrooms not straw mushrooms, which isn't as advertised. My Basil Bowl was not great, however. The sauce was runny and the noodles overcooked to the point that I couldn't eat them, even with a fork and spoon. They just sorta fell apart. I've had this dish dozens of times. This was not right. I would've said something but by the time I got any service, my kids were tired and it wouldn't have been fair to make everyone wait even longer for me to get decent food. Basically, it was easier to give up.

I love Tong's but it will be a long time before I return for dinner. They're not the only game in town, anymore. There are half a dozen other Thai restaurants within a 5 minute drive and they actually seem pleased to have us. For the first time, I can say I really didn't enjoy Tong's Thai. In fact, it soured our...
