Traveled to Julian on March 13 to buy a pie for the following holiday! Waited in line for about 25 minutes. No indoor seating and only takeaway due to Covid protocols. Once inside there is helpful staff to move the line along while keeping everyone socially distant. It looks like this place would be a great place to dine in once things return to normal.
The best part of coming inside are the smells and aromas of a great bake shop. As you work your way to the register your eyes are bombarded with fruit filled popovers, trays upon trays of pies by the slice and of course whole pies too. I remember starting to fill with dread as I would soon have to make a choice as to what pie to order. Having invested a bunch of time standing outside In the cold rain I wanted to ensure I got the best return on my investment.
While the town and all the pie shops are known for apple...it’s just not my favorite. I also got there too late in the day as cherry was all gone. They do have a sign and it’s on their website too saying they “reserve the right to run out.” LOL So still wanting something fruity and unique I ended up getting Bumbleberry Flakey crust. Let me tell you, it was so worth the drive and the wait.
So what is a bumbleberry you ask? According to Mom’s they combine blackberries, blueberries and boysenberries into this delicious filling. It was just the right balance of tart and sweet. The blueberries really shined through in certain bites making me wish that Moms would do just a blueberry pie. The real winner here however is the crust. Loads of butter mixed in this pie dough makes it extra crispy and flakey.
In addition to the whole pie to go, I also orders some of the hot apple cider to warm up from the wind and rain. Rich and delicious the cider hit the spot and definitely let me feel like I checked the requisite Julian Apple box.
This pie was just delicious and I am embarrassed to admit but it only lasted 24 hours before the whole thing was devoured. Can’t go wrong at Mom’s and with the Bumbleberry. Will...
Read moreI went in and the sign said they only had pecan. Then the young lady that helped me, Sahara told me they had apple berry and then they had strawberry rhubarb so I asked for 2 of each. I paid for those 6pies Then she told me they had apple flakey so I told her to give 2 of those as well as I wanted to gift some pies. I then paid for the additional 2pies and out of nowhere some big guy (I think his name was Oscar) came and told her that he was selling those 2 and didn't let her take them after I had already paid. Sahara was really upset and told him that she had already sold them. He said no he was taking them for another customer and that I had to wait for the next batch. He totally bullied her and it was a very horrible scene for him to cause in front of customers. So I told her that I had a 3 hour drive and to please let me know how long the wait was for the next batch. She then told me I had to ask him so I guess he's a supervisor or whatever. So I asked him and he said the wait was 40 minutes!! I was so upset! He was so rude and didn't even apologize. I then told him I didn't have time to wait and he was just like "Ok so you want a refund for everything or just the 2?" He didn't care if cancelled my order for 8 pies. He very rude and unapologetic. Very bad experience for a first time visitor to Julian. I love supporting local businesses but when I return to Julian I will definitely look...
Read moreI have called several times and have only been pushed to a voicemail. So, here is my message: I am now on my fourth visit to Mom's Pie(Julian location) and every single time nothing is the same. I have purchased approximately 40 gingersnap cookies and not two of them are the same texture. They are sold two in a pack and the customer is not allowed to choose the their own. They range from soft and chewy to hard and brittle almost concrete in texture. Luckily they are thinner cookies. Some of the packages have a green sticker on the back and some have a red sticker. The red sticker cookies seem to be much harder than the stack with the green sticker. My husband likened one of the red sticker cookies to a dog biscuit, which they do have on the menu. The dumplings was ice cold on the inside, why, I don't know. The crust was flaky and fully cooked. Which made for a pleasant treat but the gooey middle was cold. Cold as the morning air in Julian, this November 24th, 2020. It seems to me they have the pie game locked down, but trying to overextend into cookies, brownies, sandwiches and other savory treats, is an overreach and leaves more to be desired. There is seemingly a lack of quality...
