We came to Eastern Dynasty Restaurant for a weekday lunch and were surprised that the restaurant was not full at all. A year or two ago, people would have lined up for the restaurant to open to get in. Today was our luck day as there were plenty of parkings everywhere in the same plaza as Jeong Won BBQ & BonChon, etc. Normally, it’s a challenge to find parking. The waiter greeted us warmly and sat us down immediately and served us the free hot tea. Restaurant is small but clean with relaxing vibes. The dishes we ordered were salty fish & chicken tofu clay pot, pea pod leaves sautéed in garlic sauce and the deli BBQ combo of roast duck and roast pork belly served with the usual hoisin and the tangy plum dipping sauce. The tangy dipping plum sauce was “chef’s kiss” as it paired so well with the deli BBQ combo especially the roast duck. Food did not disappoint and it was not greasy or salty like a lot of Chinese dishes found in most restaurants here in San Diego. The only suggestion for improvement was for the salty fish & chicken tofu clay pot dish as the portion was on the smaller side and the taste was rather bland. It could have been better to include more ingredients to bring out the salty fish flavor for the dish. The pea pod leaves was cooked to perfection as the veggie retained the green freshness look and taste. The roast duck was moist with the familiar delicious crunchy skins. The roast pork belly was our favorite as the spices used took us way back when we were in Hong Kong. So good. The portions were on the smaller side and the restaurant charged $2 for one bowl of white rice, ouch! It’s a criminal act to charge for cooked rice in a Chinese restaurant. This is a solid Cantonese restaurant. Service was quick and waitstaff members were kind, friendly and the tea kept coming upon request; the waitstaff provided useful information to help us decide on which dishes to order. We enjoyed our meal at Eastern Dynasty and will definitely visit again to try other authentic...
Read moreCame here with the family this past weekend because a friend of mine kept raving about this restaurant, so instead of going to our normal restaurant we decided to try this place since it also got good reviews. First the place had no AC and was super muggy and hot. So we asked for ice water instead of tea. My understanding was this supposedly a nicer restaurant than the one we usually go at Ranch 99, but who the heck uses red cups for water. Like come on not a single restaurant let alone a dive bar uses red cups. I felt like I was at a college house party ready to play flip cup. Personally I think it's a bit tacky. Next we ordered our dishes...9 of them since there were 9 of us. Normally at our usual restaurant we would have plenty of food. Well the plates were really small, almost like personal size. The food though taste and presentation was really good except for the orange chicken. The orange chicken was horrible it didn't even taste like chicken, but more like a processed chemical flavor. Finally we thought we ordered 9 dishes but only 8 came out. We asked the waiter if that was all the dishes we ordered and he said yes. So when the bill came out the ninth dish was on the receipt haha, so obviously we pointed that out and had it removed. Not really any sort of apology for that, service was below par. We won't be...
Read moreWhen we came in, there was a table available but they made us wait ~10min to be seated. It didn't really make sense to us.
When we sat down and ordered, the service took forever. The food we ordered was so bland.
What we ordered:
beef chow fun: there was no flavor, no salty taste or soy sauce. it just didn't taste like anything but bland. the beef was cooked well though and there was a nice smell of wok on the noodles, just wish it had flavors then it'd be perfect. 2.5/5
choice of 2 platter (honey bbq pork, pork belly): the pork belly was yummy, the crunch on the skin and the seasoning. the honey bbq pork was okay. both came at room temperature, we had to buy a bowl of rice to eat with it. 3/5
assorted mushroom pepper steak: there was a lot of mushroom, the beef was delicious. it was well seasoned however way too oily. there was a literal pool of oil underneath the food. 2.5/5
general (tsao) chicken: it tasted just like orange chicken. the breading was thick but the chicken was at least there. it was decent. it wasn't very crunchy and came at near room temperature. 2.5/5
Overall, if you're trying to go on a diet or eat healthy in the sense of bland food, this is a place for you. if you want a well seasoned, warm/hot food when it arrives, this isn't for you. I...
