This is my favorite ice cream place. I'm a simple man with simple desires. I hate looking at ice cream lists a mile long, like we often would at Baskin Robbins.
At Somi Somi there are only 4 flavors, many of which you can combine. The ice cream comes in a tayaki waffle-like soft con. Yes, as though an actual waffle is housing your ice cream.
For those of you who may be sheltered, tayaki is traditionally made in the Japanese style of a fish waffle eaten hot with sweet red bean paste. Its essentially a waffle hotpocket. And you may think bean paste sounds nasty, but so too does the thought that corn can be made into sugar until you actually eat something with high fructose corn syrup in it.
The flavors that come in this delightful tayaki cone are milk, sesame, ube, and matcha.
It's hard to explain these flavors if you're nowhere near familiar with what they are and how they taste. Just know the ube is purple, matcha green, sesame black, and milk white. No, the colored flavors don't taste like grossly oversweetened elf and unicorn farts. You would be surprised as to the complexity of the flavor you get in your tayaki waffle cone.
Before you get your ice cream, they will ask if you would like sweet bean past or butella to line the inside of your cone. I always get nutella because I'm italianissimo that way. After you recieve your scoops, you get as many toppings as you would like. These include coco pebbles, peanuts, coconut flakesz etc...and one whole colorful macaron!
Expect a price of $7. Please just know it's going to be a $7 well spent. It's definitely a treat to be treasured on special outings or weekend fun given the price point. But i try to come here as often as i can because I lile all...
Read moreSomi Somi, and the Korean-American dessert shop in San Diego, has stolen my heart with its unique blend of Eastern and Western flavors. The only knock is seating. The place can use better seating and more seating both inside and out. Shade would also be nice for the outside...

After a bit of grocery shopping at three Japanese stores. We decided to have dessert at a Korean Ice Cream shop. Somi Somi specializes in Soft Serve Ice Cream and Taiyaki
(Taiyaki is a Japanese fish-shaped cake, commonly sold as street food. It imitates the just shape of tai, which it is named after. The most common filling is red bean paste that is made from sweetened adzuki beans. Other common fillings may be custard, chocolate, cheese, or sweet potato.)
Chuck had the Ube and Cookies and Cream. I had just the Ube Soft serve with Taiyaki with custard filling.
(Ube also known as purple yam, ube, or greater yam, among many other names, is a species of yam. The tubers are usually a vivid violet-purple to bright lavender in color, but some range in color from cream to plain white. The taste has a more of a mellow, nutty, vanilla-like flavor)
The Soft serve was delicious and was rich in flavor. The Taiyaki was soft in the inside and crunchy on the outside. This went perfectly with the ice cream.
We also bought some filled Taiyaki to bring home with us. We had them filled with Oreo Cookies, Nutella, Custard, and Taro.
The service here is excellent as the place is...
