Went here because of the great reviews. I always like to try out places where the locals go. Also like to support Mom & pops like this place. That being said, this place was nothing like going to a Mom & Pop, but more like going to your dirty Uncle Sal's apartment. Table was filthy, decor was from That 70's Show, and you got to see more crack from the owner's/server's back side then at skid row.
Even after the initial impression, I still was hoping that the food would live up to the hype. Nope! The Belgium waffle was hand carried from the back and promptly placed in the microwave. Then a mass amount of whip cream covered the rubbery disc. Oops, forgot the strawberries underneath... So how about a bowl of wilted strawberries on the side instead? Yum! The omelet was a blurry of colors, resembling diced tomatoes, green something, and I think yellow onions. Hot sauce at least made it digestible. Fresh juice??...LOL. Straws for the dirty cups?...LOL.
Unfortunately, I have to say this was the low low low light of our trip to San Diego. Everything else besides The HOVEL, was fantastic: the Island Palms Hotel on Shelter Island, breakfast in OB at Breakfast Republic (5 Stars), The Zoo and Railroad Museum, and dinner on Coronado at Miguel's.
Please do not be fooled by the high marks. The reviews on Google are usually fairly accurate and I'm so surprised by how far off they were. So, I needed to post a negative review. I don't like doing so, but this place deserves major demerits. I wouldn't be surprised if the Health District doesn't shutter this place soon. It would be an upgrade to close the...
Read moreLet me start by stating the good. The wait staff was friendly. Unfortunately, that isnt all I look for when dining out. Lets start with saying the whole place is outdated. Old, torn, dirty tables, and chairs. It was very hot as well, no climate control!! Now lets get to the less than mediocre meal. I had the "del mar fair homemade cinnamon roll" it was heated in the microwave, and hard around the edges . The potatos were ok. My daughter had a grilled cheese (wasnt on the menu, but the nice lady said she could make one). We got the bill and it came out to $24.00, which isnt too terrible but for the atmosphere and poor quality, I was not happy... The grilled cheese was almost $8 dollars! Thats unheard of, especially for this little hole in the wall place. There was also a random $2.00 charge tacked on to the bill. Anyway dont come here,...
Read moreThis was a small family run greasy spoon type diner. It’s definitely one of those hole in the wall awesome places. The indoor seating may not be ideal for larger groups. We had 5 people and ended up splitting between a table and the counter, which was still really enjoyable. The whole atmosphere from the staff to the local regulars made the already delicious food that much better. The staff even had fun joking about with us once they learned we were from “Wis-can-son”. We will definitely be stopping in again before we head back home. (It’s been added to our official breakfast list if we ever find ourselves back in California) If you have the chance to stop in here I highly recommend grabbing a jar or 2 of their homemade jam to take home. I’m not usually a marmalade fan but their orange marmalade...
